What works

installation is working, however sometimes dialogs are empty, but you can guess what is istaller asking.

SPSS 8.0 runs successfully.

Works also:
  • opening files
  • sorting
  • weighting
  • pasting syntax
  • analysis if there is no graphical output, however almost always when there is output written into output window, something is missing and some error emerges. For instance: window with title "Sax Basic" is open and there is an error message: "Macro/module does not exists: c:\Program Files\SPSS\Scripts\global.sps"
  • adding your own "looks" (definitions how output looks like)
  • copy paste from output window to
  • exporting output to HTML (but if you do not remove titles, which are not shown in output at all, HTML output looks a little bit strange - titles are strange fonts in HTML output)

What does not

drawing graphs

drawing scree plots (factor analysis)

for all graphics - when try to draw it, SPSS crashes

in output window "Title" section is empty and it "reserves" a lot of space. But you can delete it.

menu and dialog fonts look strange

printing - actually it works, but output is very small. For instance - table which should be 1/3 of the A4 paper is 1,5 x 1 cm size.

Additional Comments

SPSS is considered as a killer application for research institutes, social science universities and marketing research companies. I know many people which say that SPSS is the only reason why they are not on Linux. I also contacted SPSS representatives and they also share that opinion. But unfortunately there will be no Linux port for SPSS (except server version), because it would be too complicated to port SPSS to Linux because of drawing functions (SPSS people told me that). So this is quite important application.
