The install works and the program starts. If you create a new account, it then logs you in. If you close the program and restart, it logs you into that account again. I successfully made a call. Many things don't work, see below.
What does not
No icons appear on any of the buttons, so the call button and disconnect buttons don't work which have no text, so you have to guess where they are. The main icon bar has text displayed by default which is slightly more usable.
If you try to supply the username and password of an existing account, Skype won't log in, it tells you your username and password were rejected. If you creat a new account, it will log in until you choose Sign Out, then it won't log in again.
Although I was able to make a short call, Skype crashed during the call and as I was unable to log in again without creating a new account, that was the end of that!
What was not tested
The majority of the functionality was not tested due to the login problem.
Skype version tested was v126.96.36.199, latest as at today, freshly downloaded today.

HOWTO Skype 2.5 with Wine
1. Install Wine 0.9.21 (verified) and begin with a fresh ~./wine directory.
2. Install Skype 188.8.131.52 (verified) from http://www.skype.com and the SkypeSetup.exe file. The installer should run flawlessly.
Run #winecfg and select Windows XP mode for Skype.exe if it's not
already done. You may use the ALSA sound driver with this program,
however OSS will work just as well.
4. Run Skype.exe from it's working directory and apply any settings necessary to use your sound board(s). The menus will not be active later.
5. Run #winecfg again and select Win98 mode for Skype.exe so that video support will not be enabled and calls can be placed without the program crashing. This mode, unfortunately, disables the menus, so you cannot change settings without using WinXP mode.
6. Use Skype!
Any problem related to microphone issues is most likely a problem
with your mixer settings. Look for a "capture" channel and
unmute/adjust volume on it. Also, make sure that if your card has
modular mic/line inputs that your mic channel is selected for that
Driver issues have also been reported with intel8x0 drivers, where you cannot run the card in full duplex without setting up a dmix profile for ALSA (see the Gentoo-Wiki for hints on how to do this). emu10k1 drivers also have been reported to crash in full duplex mode.
