What works

Opening cutscenes mostly work, and are correctly rendered for the most part (see below).

The main game works great, as far as I tested. Switches switch, you can get into and turn the tower, you can open the spaceship. You can open and visit mechanical age. You can go grab the white page (if you know where it is ;) or either of the red/blue pages. You can visit the Stoneship age. Day/night effects and weather effects look great.

Setup tool works.

Loading and saving games works, as well as starting a new game.

What does not

In the beginning, looking towards the library (specifically, it seems when the inside of the library is rendered) slows the game down considerably, but after looking at it for some time the game sped up and I no longer experienced this slowdown.

If you watch the opening cutscene, when the MYST book falls it will fall onto a garbled texture and the game will crash. Click to skip the cutscene and workaround this.

Game occasionally hangs or crashes when you do something, with wine console trying to invoke the debugger. Once happened when I clicked Quit in the menu, once when trying to open the door next to where you start. Behavior is not constantly reproducible.

Clicking on a diary (in the bookshelf in the library... IE one of the "readable" books) causes the game to crash. The unreadable books work.

Slight clipping issue on marker switch handles (game bug?)

Movies do not play on textures, a solid white texture being shown instead. This occurs on the dock fore-chamber holographic projector of Atrus' message to Cathrine, and on the MYST book's flyby movie, as well as Sirrus and Achenar in their books, and the linking books to mechanical age and stoneship. The exception are the swirly effects on the pictures in the library, which look perfect. This problem may be related to fixme:avifile:AVIFileExit (): stub! messages in the console (IE not that I think the stub is the cause, but the movies are probably AVIs and using wine's avifile module).

The cursor is held inside the Wine desktop window even if Winecfg has been set to disallow DirectX holding the cursor. Not sure if this is intentional behavior (setting only applies to games that explicitly window themselves?)

Also, if another window is over the Wine desktop window's center, the cursor will be visible but will still be "caught" there. Any clicks will be handled by the window OVER the Wine desktop. This is not desired behavior.

Furthermore if the user is able to move the cursor to another monitor before it snaps back, it will NOT be snapped back until the cursor is moved back to the monitor with Wine desktop on it.

The linking books to Mechanical Age and Stoneship Age are missing the textures on the covers of the close up models (when you click them).

This message appears several times in the console:
fixme:msvidc32:CRAM_DriverProc Unknown message: 400e 0 0
It does not appear to affect the game.

Workarounds

What was not tested

Installer was not tested.

Game was only tested with a no-CD crack.

I did not test the Mechanical or Stoneship ages. I was not able to visit other ages because I lacked clues needed from the diaries (probably could've done Channelwood but I think I've filed an extensive enough report as well!)

Game was only tested in a Wine desktop window.

Additional Comments

Game may be completable if you already know the solutions to all the puzzles. The highest priority bug fix would be the constant crashes when trying to read a diary. Next would be the unpredictable crashes, if the cause of those can be found.

HowTo / Notes

HOWTO

HOWTO: UbiSoft RealMyst

Wine-1.3.24

Overview:

This HOWTO covers installing UbiSoft's RealMyst from the retail box with a CD crack using Wine-1.3.24

NOTE: This HOWTO is based on a clean installation of Wine-1.3.24 on Ubuntu Jaunty( 9.04 ) using NVIDIA GeForce based graphics cards. Results may vary if other applications are currently installed within Wine, or a different operating system platform is used and/or a different graphics card is used.

Installation

  • Make sure your Graphics and Sound cards/drivers and installed and running properly.
  • Download and install Wine-1.3.24 if necessary( For best results remove prior versions of Wine )
  • Down the Indeo Codecs Legacy Package from http://www.moviecodec.com/downloads/31d.html
  • Run iv5setup.exe with wine and follow the prompts. Make sure to select the custom install option then remove (un-tick) the netscape plug-in component from the install. * Note this must be done or the install will freeze
  • Insert the RealMyst cd then go in to the installation directory and run the setup.exe with wine. This can be done via console with the command 'wine setup.exe' or in the gnome file brower by right clicking on it and clicking on 'open with wine'.
  • Follow the prompts, once you get to the prompt called "install you prefer"  make sure to select 'Full'. This will install all of the game contents to your hard drive.
  • Once the game has been successfully install you will need to download the latest patch for realMyst.
  • Download the realMyst v1.11 patch from http://www.ubi.com/US/Downloads/Info.aspx?dlId=62
  • Run the real_myst_patch_v1.11.exe with wine and follow the installation prompts.
  • Once successful download the following 'realMYST v1.1.1 [ENGLISH] No-CD/Vista Fixed EXE' crack from http://m0004.gamecopyworld.com/games/pc_realmyst.shtml*Note It must be that exact crack. I had tried other versions and this was the only version that worked for me.
  • Extract the 'RealMyst_vista_nocd.rar' and copy the 'RealMYST.exe' to your installation directory of RealMyst ( this may be "~/.wine/drive_c/ProgramFiles/Mattel Interactive/realMYST Interactive 3D Edition" but it really depends on how you configured wine and your distribution.) *Note I Suggest making a backup of your RealMyst.exe before replacing it with this one.
  • Run winecfg, under Applications tab click on the 'Add Application' button and go to your RealMyst installation directory and select RealMyst.exe.
  • Make sure RealMyst.exe is highlighted  under application settings and change the windows version to 'Windows XP'.
  • Click on the Audio Tab and tick the 'EsounD driver'. Click the 'Test Sound' button to make sure its working.
  • Click on the Graphics tab and make sure the "Allow the windows manager to control the windows" is selected.
  • Click ok
  • run 'realMYSTSetup.exe' either from the drop down menu in gnome (Applications/wine/Programs/RealMyst/RealMyst Setup/) or in console with 'wine ~/.wine/drive_c/ProgramFiles/Mattel Interactive/realMYST Interactive 3D Edition/realMYSTSetup.exe'
  • Select from the Direct3D drop-down menu "Direct3D Hal [wine D3D7 Hal]"
  • Set the screen resolution to whatever you feel your computer can handle. If your using a modern computer I suggest the highest possible. Then click ok.
  • Now run the game. This can be done from the gnome menu (Applications/wine/Programs/RealMyst/RealMyst Interactive 3D Edition) or from the console with 'wine ~/.wine/drive_c/ProgramFiles/Mattel Interactive/realMYST Interactive 3D Edition/realMYST.exe'
  • Enjoy one of the best games ever created.

    Known Issues:

    • Corrupt file called PageLoop.bik causes the end sequence to crash.

    Fix for problems

    • Download the PageLoop.bik file from one of these locations

    http://www.dl.yagami-sama.co.uk/cgi-bin/schlabo/dl.pl?PageLoop

    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=FVE6094B

    http://www.4shared.com/file/cQBH-zEB/PageLoop.html

    • copy the PageLoop.bik file to your  "RealMyst/Scn/Maps/" directory. I'n my case it's  "~/.wine/drive_c/ProgramFiles/Mattel Interactive/realMYST Interactive 3D Edition/Scn/Maps/ "
    • Fixed! The game will now run through completely. Enjoy.
