What works

Installation, sound, textures, environment (sky, water), videos (after configuring).

I had to configure a few things before the game was mostly playable (by mostly, I mean playable to the end):

* Weird textures (green lines) in the readable books' covers after opening and immediately after you click the book to open it in the opening cutscene; related to this line:

fixme:msvidc32:CRAM_DriverProc Unknown message: 400e 0 0

This is because the various movies in RealMYST use different codecs; the above movies depend on the MSVC codec and the built in wine codec isn't working properly. The fix was to copy msvidc32.dll (from google or valid Windows installation) into \windows\system32 and configure Wine to use the native msvidc32 codec.

* "Readable books" in library bookshelf crash
* Red and Blue books, Age linking books, show a white textured video
* Turning left when arriving on Myst Island crashes
* Opening cutscene crashes at the end
* Bink dll error (when doing something with the menu, probably New game)

The above crashes are caused by a missing IV50 codec and were fixed for me by installing codinstl.exe (download in the June 8, 2007 review, or google). As a side note, I did not need this codec pack for the demo version of RealMYST.

The "crystal lab" in Rime kept crashing, until I went to the \Scn\Maps directory and figured out that the videos there needed the IV32 codec! I got this from iv5setup.exe by Ligos, which should be available on the web (the free version). I only selected the 3.2 codec when installing, since Codinstl.exe already installed version 5 and 4. Don't select any of the HTML/Help options, or the installer will crash upon installing.

What does not

The initial realMystSetup.exe that runs after install won't save the settings; I had to run the setup exe (which configures screen resolution, anti-aliasing, etc) separately.

I had one crash when opening the final door to access the ship room in the Selenitic age. However, when I went to open the same door after the crash, it was fine. I'm suspecting either a random codec/ntdll issue or an avi issue.

Occasionally, after starting the game, pressing [ESC] to go to the main menu, and resuming, the sound stops working. Not sure what's going on here (may be my sound setup), but I'm able to restart RealMYST and get the sound working again

A fixme kept flooding the console, but the game was still playable:

fixme:d3d:state_wrap (WINED3DRS_WRAP0) Texture wraping not yet supported

This outputs at every game quit:

fixme:d3d:IWineD3DDeviceImpl_Release (0x12c868) Device released with resources still bound, acceptable but unexpected
fixme:d3d:dumpResources Leftover resource 0x12b590 with type 1,WINED3DRTYPE_SURFACE
fixme:d3d:dumpResources Leftover resource 0x12b380 with type 1,WINED3DRTYPE_SURFACE
err:d3d:IWineD3DDeviceImpl_Release Context array not freed!

What was not tested

I did not use (nor need) a no-CD crack to run the game.

Codinstl.exe may not be necessary if you install the codecs from iv5setup.exe by Ligos.

Additional Comments

My RealMYST version won't patch with 1.1.1; I get a error that says that the readme.txt file installed is different from the patch's version. I learned that to save over an existing game, you have to erase it beforehand. :P In summary, the right codecs fix most of the playability issues. I recommend trying iv5setup (you only need the decompression codecs) before codinstl.

HowTo / Notes

HOWTO: UbiSoft RealMyst

This HOWTO covers installing UbiSoft's RealMyst from the retail box with a CD crack using Wine-1.3.24

NOTE: This HOWTO is based on a clean installation of Wine-1.3.24 on Ubuntu Jaunty( 9.04 ) using NVIDIA GeForce based graphics cards. Results may vary if other applications are currently installed within Wine, or a different operating system platform is used and/or a different graphics card is used.

  • Make sure your Graphics and Sound cards/drivers and installed and running properly.
  • Download and install Wine-1.3.24 if necessary( For best results remove prior versions of Wine )
  • Down the Indeo Codecs Legacy Package from
  • Run iv5setup.exe with wine and follow the prompts. Make sure to select the custom install option then remove (un-tick) the netscape plug-in component from the install. * Note this must be done or the install will freeze
  • Insert the RealMyst cd then go in to the installation directory and run the setup.exe with wine. This can be done via console with the command 'wine setup.exe' or in the gnome file brower by right clicking on it and clicking on 'open with wine'.
  • Follow the prompts, once you get to the prompt called "install you prefer"  make sure to select 'Full'. This will install all of the game contents to your hard drive.
  • Once the game has been successfully install you will need to download the latest patch for realMyst.
  • Download the realMyst v1.11 patch from
  • Run the real_myst_patch_v1.11.exe with wine and follow the installation prompts.
  • Once successful download the following 'realMYST v1.1.1 [ENGLISH] No-CD/Vista Fixed EXE' crack from*Note It must be that exact crack. I had tried other versions and this was the only version that worked for me.
  • Extract the 'RealMyst_vista_nocd.rar' and copy the 'RealMYST.exe' to your installation directory of RealMyst ( this may be "~/.wine/drive_c/ProgramFiles/Mattel Interactive/realMYST Interactive 3D Edition" but it really depends on how you configured wine and your distribution.) *Note I Suggest making a backup of your RealMyst.exe before replacing it with this one.
  • Run winecfg, under Applications tab click on the 'Add Application' button and go to your RealMyst installation directory and select RealMyst.exe.
  • Make sure RealMyst.exe is highlighted  under application settings and change the windows version to 'Windows XP'.
  • Click on the Audio Tab and tick the 'EsounD driver'. Click the 'Test Sound' button to make sure its working.
  • Click on the Graphics tab and make sure the "Allow the windows manager to control the windows" is selected.
  • Click ok
  • run 'realMYSTSetup.exe' either from the drop down menu in gnome (Applications/wine/Programs/RealMyst/RealMyst Setup/) or in console with 'wine ~/.wine/drive_c/ProgramFiles/Mattel Interactive/realMYST Interactive 3D Edition/realMYSTSetup.exe'
  • Select from the Direct3D drop-down menu "Direct3D Hal [wine D3D7 Hal]"
  • Set the screen resolution to whatever you feel your computer can handle. If your using a modern computer I suggest the highest possible. Then click ok.
  • Now run the game. This can be done from the gnome menu (Applications/wine/Programs/RealMyst/RealMyst Interactive 3D Edition) or from the console with 'wine ~/.wine/drive_c/ProgramFiles/Mattel Interactive/realMYST Interactive 3D Edition/realMYST.exe'
  • Enjoy one of the best games ever created.

    Known Issues:

    • Corrupt file called PageLoop.bik causes the end sequence to crash.

    Fix for problems

    • Download the PageLoop.bik file from one of these locations

    • copy the PageLoop.bik file to your  "RealMyst/Scn/Maps/" directory. I'n my case it's  "~/.wine/drive_c/ProgramFiles/Mattel Interactive/realMYST Interactive 3D Edition/Scn/Maps/ "
    • Fixed! The game will now run through completely. Enjoy.
