ArtRage

ArtRage 2 lets you get right in to painting, just open the app and it's all there! The paint tools are easy to get to, and it turns your screen in to a canvas so you can get on with the fun parts without worrying about documents, windows, or menus. Better still, the tools have been designed to feel real, so you don't need to learn how to use them to get something that looks good, you can just pick them up, and off you go, whether you've painted with real tools before or not.

What works

Program Installs and runs perfectly. Although I needed to download a library file called "gdiplus.dll" first, and put it in the windows/system folder.

What does not

For reasons not yet known, it refuses to save files in folder locations longer than 32 characters.

ie:

it will display:

"An error occurred on attempting to read/write data from/to a file stream. There was an error trying to save your work. Please try again using a different name or location."

when I try to save it to:

"/home/iain/.wine/drive_c/windows/profiles/iain/My Documents"

Though when I create a link to it and put it in my home folder:

"/home/iain/My Wine Docs"

It will save just fine.

I also cannot open up the manual directly through the program, possible also got something to do with locations longer than 32 characters.

"/home/ellz/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Ambient Design/ArtRage 2/Resources/ArtRage 2.5 Manual.pdf"

Additional Comments

Amazing paint effects. Makes me wonder why no one has made a Linux native variant on it! :D -- Other notes. by Iain on Tuesday February 19th 2008, 11:50 Hi, just to add to my test data: I've found out that the "Ruler" stencils crash the program. All other stencils work fine, and importing stencils works too! I've also fixed the location length problem (well, made a workaround). In wine configuration, set the Z:\ Drive as the location as your Documents folder in Wine, and all files will be saved to Z:\, not the very long /home/name/etc/etc/etc/etc/etc/etc/etc/My Documents. But no worries, as they will be both the same place! Iain
