The graphics run fine after some tweaking. I had to set the ForceCompatibleGFX to 1 in the Fusion.ini file and manually set the colour depth to 16-bit in my etc/X11/xorg.conf file before restarting the X-server to get Fusion to work correctly (see below for more info)
Sound worked fine without any errors, using the default settings.
Saving to SRAM for games that require it works.
Load/Save states work.
Game Genie codes work.
WAV logging works.
All the configuration settings worked OK. Indeed, the controller setup worked better than it does on Windows!
What does not
The default graphical settings the first time Fusion runs (ForceCompatibleGFX = 0 in Fusion.ini) now runs without the 32-bit required error message from Wine 0.9.51, but the graphics shifts down to the right and bottom of the Fusion window, leaving a black border on the left and top of the screen. Full screen only displays garbled graphics from other windows and the desktop. Setting the ForceCompatibleGFX option as above fixes the fault, without some inconvenience.
What was not tested
The Netplay function.
