It works with a virtual desktop, sometimes the initial login dialog (e.g. "error, wrong password, try again") renders as blank white, but I am in the game now and wandering around Borealis.

fixme:ddraw:d3d_vertex_buffer7_Optimize
The only thing I could gather that was different from usual in the output was the preceding fixme. Basically, from zoning from GTC into the dungeon the game just hangs. Forceful shutdown of process, then tried to log back in - game just hangs. Tried it with wine1.7 and the same issue.
Would be nice if someone else could see if the same thing happens to them...
I was able to just do what I needed for a quest using my Win laptop and after leaving the dungeon everything is fine for Wine again.
Cheers.

Because of this I decided to download the latest version of Wine1.5, which always played AO better - though meshes/textures are not as good as 1.7, the playability is something that tips the scale for me.
Packages of older version are just not available anymore, and I do not like the way in Ubuntu wine1.6 pulls in wine1.7 etc etc. Compiling Wine from source is just my preferred way as one always has more control. GCC 4.5(.4) is the version which seems to work seamlessly to compile Wine1.5. This latest version of Wine1.5 also does not need any patching.

I would like to know if anyone else has run into this problem. Even if you don't have this problem let me know please.
Btw. the new shop interface seems to work just fine.
Old, unrelated problems:
- Mouse doesn't work properly. raw3.patch seemingly fixes it, but during extensive play there are still some minor input problems (especially with ClickSaver)
- Sounds and/or battle musics were somehow buggy. Also the game crashed randomly. I "fixed" these problems by setting "Battle-music" to "off" and disabling sound completely. (The game was 100% stable after this change.)

Now using Wine 1.5.8 and Mesa-git.
by pahl on Saturday July 14th 2012, 16:28
Also I forgot Wine uses 32-bit Mesa and thus I was in fact using old Mesa 7.11.2. So now I really upgraded Mesa to the latest git version: The bug still exists, but it's no longer an issue. It seems to trigger only once after starting the game, and it's possible the get the screen back by minimizing and restoring the game window within the Wine Desktop -- a solution which didn't work with Mesa 7.11.2.

I can't patch wine with the mouse patch - I get "gcc failed" when running make install. Does Wine 1.3.33 not need this patch, or is the patch not compatible with this version of wine? I'm guessing the former, as once I got the game working it seemed to work fine.
Installed ie6 just fine.
Installed AOline fine.
Run. Patches itself to 18.4
After patching, it immediately crashes: "The program anarchy.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close"
In the console I see.

On a machine which meets comes in between the minimum specs and the requirements this game will not play full-screen unless a new toon is being created. Otherwise it will always time-out during connecting.
Oddly it will run at 1280x800 *WINDOWED* but cannot connect at 1280x800 fullscreen...
It does not appear to be a problem in Wine, unless it has to do with how the games startup pegs one core at 100% until the loading screen finally shows up... However, I did not have problems with older versions of Wine and older versions of the game - and that on an older machine.

ubuntu 10.04
1
Setup wineconfig to emulate desktop.
Select Alsa for sound at wineconfig, will work with pulseaudio.
2
Remember to install ie6 with winetricks, so you will be able to patch by using AO windowed patcher, not manually.
3
Setup AO to use fullscreen.
Alternatively
you can try a windowed resolution lower than your desktop, may be configure it manually, otherwise will give error. I didnt try windowed, its just a tip.
PS.: a playonlinux entry would be cool :)

I have the problem on Ubuntu 9.04 using Wine 1.1.24 using Nvidia driver v185.18.14.
When you press the "go forward" key, you char seems to stop and run and stop and run very fast and move very slowly.
There is a workaround for this.
Open a terminal and press "xset r off" to remove any key repeat management. Very annoying when you type text but the char moves as normal.
Enter "xset r on" in a terminal when you're done with the game.

Full screen mode works great but if I try to use window it goes to black sceen where it hangs then crashes. I don't get any crash report so do not know what is causing the crash.
updated my wine to 1.1.20 to see if that would resolve the issue but still having the same issues.
running wine on Ubuntu 8.04 at this time with a Nvidia restricted drivers.
had some one look at my xorg.conf file and it appears to be in order.
tried different device settings in the game and different resolutions only difference I find is that the black screen will last longer before crashing.

In case you get a lot of warnings while running AO (for example when you are an owner of a Geforce4 4200), you can redirect these warnings using:
./Anarchy.exe >/dev/null 1>/dev/null 2>/dev/null
In my case these redirections even double the frame rate!

is pipeing all output to null device , plus redirecting error msg to stdio which then will also go to null device , plus no debug from wine itself, this should be the prefered way i guess

Sometimes randomly when I am walking through a town, the client will just crash out of no where. Just as if it had seen fog. I have come to the conclusion that when I see a certain profession using a certain buff, that effect makes the client use fog. Fog crashes the client, and therefore this does too.
I'm assuming it's fog because it gives the same output errors as fog. I had to disable tracers to get it to work correctly.

Finally got AO working in 7.10 ubuntu gutsy gibbons + Wine 0.9.46.
It runs smooth untill i enter certain areas, such as borealis, player city shop room, apf place's bridge. my fps drops to 0 or near.
yet in OA for example my fps is steady and theres no visible laggyness. I can do alien playfield raid with 40+ people on screen and still runs smoothly, but when ever i turn my view on a building in borealis with no other people on screen my fps just drops!
Anyone else had this problem? and anyone got a clue how to fix it? i'd hate to have to go back to using M$ software :(

2. Click Accept, and go to the login screen.
3. I put in my Account name and Pass and press Enter.
4. I choose my Character and press Ok
!5. The login screen closes, and I get the screen from AO, where it normally should run. And it is black.

i have been able to get it to patch by downloading the patch.exe manually and throwing a native dll in there. after that i set the game version up manually and got it to work. maybe someone else who can verify those steps can add a small how to for it because unfortunately i dont really have the time to recheck.
it would also help to actually submit a bugreport.

get the error "An unsupported operation was attempted." when patcher opens after that it will close up with out patching
also tried to patch with the supplied .exe file but this will close out after the files are downloaded to the c:/windows/temp folder.
some people have found copying the install over from the Windows partition but I'd like to see if we can find a way to do this from wine.

Also tried to patch with the supplied *.exe files and found out, that patching was closing out after downloading the files to the temp folder because mfc42.dll was missing in my /.wine/drive_c/windows/system32 dir. Simply copied the file into that directory and patching went on. However, the same error occured ("An unsupported operation was attempted").
by Antoine Chavasse on Saturday September 29th 2007, 15:27
To do this, copy the older AnarchyPatcher.exe (it may work with an even older version, I don't know what it is they keep changing in the patcher all the time) over the current one.
However, if you start the game normally, the launcher will detect the patcher is not the latest version and will redownload it automatically.
To avoid this, the patcher needs to be started directly from the command line, this way:
$ cd
$ wine AnarchyPatcher.exe 17.5.3_EP1
The "17.5.3_EP1" parameter is to simulate running the patcher from the launcher, otherwise it would just run the launcher instead.
by Antoine Chavasse on Saturday September 29th 2007, 15:29
by Pietro Fontana on Tuesday November 27th 2007, 13:03
1) Download the 17.5.1-17.5.2 patcher from here (not the EP1 if you have free account) ftp.funcom.com/cd/patches/
This is necessary for take a working AnarchyPatcher.exe
2) Download the 17.5.2-17.5.3 patcher
3) In you AO install folder, rename AnarchyPatcher.exe in .original
4) Launch the AOPatch_v17.5.1-v17.5.2.exe, go ahead until it tell you where to install. Leave the windows alone and with file manager go to your .wine/drive_c/windows/temp and you will notice a folder that end with ~tmp. Inside you will find AnarchyPatcher.exe and CopyPatcher.exe. Copy it in your AO folder and close the installation windows.
5) Launch the AOPatch_v17.5.2-v17.5.3.exe, go ahead until it tell you where to install. Leave the windows alone and with file manager go to your .wine/drive_c/windows/temp and you will notice a folder that end with ~tmp. Inside you will find the a folder called "Patches". Copy it in your AO folder and close the installation windows.
6) In you AO install folder, open terminal and write: wine AnarchyPatcher.exe. Go on and it will install the patch
Sadly you had to do this with all the patch until the latest version. Don't run Anarchy otherwise it will overwrite your version of the Anarchy patcher and you have to redo all the step.
by Pietro Fontana on Tuesday November 27th 2007, 13:18
1) Download the 17.5.1-17.5.2 patcher from here (not the EP1 if you have free account) ftp.funcom.com/cd/patches/
This is necessary for take a working AnarchyPatcher.exe
2) Launch the AOPatch_v17.5.1-v17.5.2.exe, go ahead until it tell you where to install. Leave the windows alone and with file manager go to your .wine/drive_c/windows/temp and you will notice a folder that end with ~tmp. Inside you will find AnarchyPatcher.exe and CopyPatcher.exe. Copy it in your AO folder and close the installation windows.
3) In you AO install folder, open terminal and write: wine AnarchyPatcher.exe "target version". Do this until the latest patch. If the problem come again just redo the step or save a copy of AnarchyPatcher.exe take from the 17.5.1 in another place so overwrite the corrupted one is more fast.

I haven't tested AO in a long time, so when I started it, it started patching 17.2 -> 17.4.1. It got up to 17.4 normally, and then exited, saying that I needed to rerun the patcher to get to the server level.
Everytime I re-ran the patcher, it created an AnarchyPatcher.err saying that the patcher file didn't match the checksum, at which point it copied it from PatchesUndo (basically replacing the patcher with the same version, over and over).
Thinking the patcher was corrupt, I renamed the copy in PatchesUndo and re-ran. This causes it to re-download the patcher at startup (just as I had hoped). Unfortunately, it complains that this version also fails the checksum. :\
If no one else is having the issue, I'll try to completely reinstall AO when I have the time. This testing is under the current .9.41 release, btw.

Still would like to get AO and clicksaver running at the same time. Although any time I run this with wine and try to launch something else it isn't working.

The game is pretty suspectible to lag, which makes combat especially difficult. It can't be helped. Lag is more or less equal to windows AO, except zoning works mysteriously faster for me through wine. Console gets spammed with one message all the time while running:
fixme:d3d:IWineD3DDeviceImpl_ValidateDevice (0x172f60) : stub
I found one game-crashing bug while testing around. With right click to the main chat window and choosing "New window" the game hangs and has to be killed to get it vanish. It also appears through "Chat config" choice and trying "Clone window" from there. So creating a new in-game window seems to be the cause of this.

Game also had some troubles with displaying in the Omni city, its kinda messed up: bin.mypage.sk/FILES/Anarchy-meessed.jpg
I'm using wine 0.9.32 on Ubuntu 6.06, with Anarchy Online 17.1.2. I have 2GHz PC with 512 ram and geForce so it should be running allrighty.
Do you have some idea how to tune wine to run better ?

I had lots of troubles when I was patching downloaded 16.something to current 17.1.2. Patch went allright, but after patching I saw that nothing was patched and I still had version 16.something.
Reason: I did not choose graphic driver properly. After selecting it patch went allright and all was good.
How to set driver: I saw some comments to edit the Main.cfg and add there name of device. This does not work for me. Alot easier it was as written in other comments - select driver when requested, then press space, then press Ok - and it works!

Solutions tried:
-removing bink videos from Mediacache folder and "-w"ing
-ALSA module is not enabled
-disabling all options under the "Enviroment" settings ingame
Video drivers are working properly because I'm getting 20-30 FPS outdoors. As far as I can tell the crashes have nothing to do with where I am ingame at the time.
System:
Gentoo Linux
Wine 0.9.29
Xorg 7.1.1
WM: Enlightenment dr17 (also tried Gnome, and no WM at all)
opengl drivers: nvidia binary drivers.

"cd /home/seb/AO && wine Anarchy.exe"
while the game loaded, it wouldn't stay up for very long. Running the game from the terminal in the AO directory seems to solve this problem. For anybody wondering how to capture Wine's output when a game is crashing X with it do this:
"wine Program.exe > winelog 2>$1"

As far as I can tell this should be correct, but it still gives me the "you need to select a device first" line and when I attempt to select the device it just repeats itself. Also to be noted I have switched GfxDevice to GfxDeviceName and then back again without any change to the outcome.
I'm sad now, all that time patching the shadowlands client up to date and it fizzles when I'm so close to never having to touch that foul microsoft creation ever again.

wine /windows/c/Program Files/Funcom/Anarchy\ Online/Anarchy.exe
does not work but
cd /windows/c/Program Files/Funcom/Anarchy\ Online/
wine Anarchy.exe
does work
You can also create a menu item and set the work path to the Anarchy Online fold path.

Sad.
Config generated by the game is below.
GfxDeviceName matches what's displayed. There is a GfxDevice whis is a silly looking string.

The GfxDevice is strange, i don't even have it in my config. Try remove that line and start the game again, you never know.
Unfortunately i can't replicate your problem since i'm not running Wine for Anarchy Online anymore, but i do like to keep supporting it and might do a new checkout in one of the upcoming Wine versions to see if it still runs and what changed.
by Oscar on Tuesday September 26th 2006, 1:41
When the app writes the config back it adds all the other lines, and the ^M line endings... That is to be expected I think the game being developed for Windows. Their config parser prob expects it to be that way too.
I also tried without ^Ms, but I'll test it again tonight.
I don't have the game in my office :-D
by Oscar on Friday September 29th 2006, 6:37
Any ideas?
That lot of zeroes looks like a device identifier in windows. Maybe the configurator wants to obtain such information about the controller it finds and cannot.
