It's ALIVE! (again)
by Jonathan Neufeld on Wednesday April 7th 2021, 2:01
After years I've got this working again on Wine v5.5!
It works with a virtual desktop, sometimes the initial login dialog (e.g. "error, wrong password, try again") renders as blank white, but I am in the game now and wandering around Borealis.
Ubuntu 18.04 / Wine 4.1
by Adrian Johnson on Saturday February 9th 2019, 5:01
Using the winehq-devel package has resolved the broken login screen for me, haven't tested thoroughly but looks promising...

...I also love how the old client magically supports higher resolutions under wine :D
Works on WINE staging 2.2
by Jonathan Neufeld on Sunday March 5th 2017, 20:46
Works with my NVIDIA GTX 960, windowed mode, 32-bit WINE instance. I created a desktop entry with the following pertinent details:

Exec=env WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.winex86 wine AnarchyOnline.exe
Icon=/var/local/windows/anarchy/ao.ico
Name=Anarchy Online
Path=/var/local/windows/anarchy

Make sure you've also run the following (WINEARCH and WINEPREFIX are very important here!):
env WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.winex86 winetricks dotnet20 corefonts fontfix vcrun2005 vcrun6
AO New Engine, any tips?
by Henry on Wednesday October 5th 2016, 1:49
has anyone been able to run AO new engine? AO >= 18.8

step 2 issue
by adam bell on Monday March 14th 2016, 0:59
I am trying to fallow this forum but step 2 keeps saying forbidden when I click it. I have the game downloaded and patched but when I click play all I get is a black window.

I miss playing this game ever since I had to make the switch to mac of work and school. any help getting it running would be greatly appreciated.
Launching problem
by CC on Monday February 22nd 2016, 12:00
So I'm pretty noob in wine and everything. I installed and patched correctly (I think at least) Anarchy Online. When I'm in the AO launch window I go to Settings and choose "Run in window". Then I press Ok. Then I hit PLAY. When I do I get a AO window but with weird pattern from my internet windows. I don't have sound from AO and can't do anything in the AO window. I tried to use another rendering device but it aint working either. I installed the prefix D3D9-39 but no results.
I try to run it on my macbook 2GHz Intel Core 2 DUO, 4 GO 667 MHz, DDR2 SDRAM, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M.

Anyone got an idea of what do I have to do to make it work please?
I hope I was clear :/
Thanks!!
New Beta Client
by [email protected] on Wednesday November 11th 2015, 15:27
It seems the new beta client requires the native d3dx9_36.dll which can be installed via winetricks, but for me the display seems to be sort of "interleaved" with stripes across the entire display.
RE: New Beta Client
by J V on Tuesday December 1st 2015, 12:20
What wine version were you running? I did `winetricks d3dx9` so I have the 36 override (Among others) but I'm getting a black box.
RE: New Beta Client
by [email protected] on Tuesday December 1st 2015, 23:00
Running the latest version of wine. I did not do "winetricks d3dx9". I only did "winetricks d3dx9_36". Afterwards, I had to open winecfg and set d3dx9_36.dll to native (only), not (native then builtin).
Problem with GREATER TIR COUNTY (cyborg barracks)
by rjd on Wednesday September 25th 2013, 15:35
wine 1.5.22

fixme:ddraw:d3d_vertex_buffer7_Optimize

The only thing I could gather that was different from usual in the output was the preceding fixme. Basically, from zoning from GTC into the dungeon the game just hangs. Forceful shutdown of process, then tried to log back in - game just hangs. Tried it with wine1.7 and the same issue.

Would be nice if someone else could see if the same thing happens to them...

I was able to just do what I needed for a quest using my Win laptop and after leaving the dungeon everything is fine for Wine again.

Cheers.

No longer a problem with later version of WINE. 2024.
Preferred Tool Versions
by rjd on Wednesday September 11th 2013, 17:37
I have noticed that later version of Wine do not run as well - or at least for me. For instance, the new Daily Mission area in Athen is almost unplayable. Borealis also has always caused a slow down but even more so with Wine 1.6/7.

Because of this I decided to download the latest version of Wine1.5, which always played AO better - though meshes/textures are not as good as 1.7, the playability is something that tips the scale for me.

Packages of older version are just not available anymore, and I do not like the way in Ubuntu wine1.6 pulls in wine1.7 etc etc. Compiling Wine from source is just my preferred way as one always has more control. GCC 4.5(.4) is the version which seems to work seamlessly to compile Wine1.5. This latest version of Wine1.5 also does not need any patching.

AO 18.5.0
by pahl on Sunday July 8th 2012, 14:50
Ever since the new 18.5.0 patch I have had trouble zoning in the game. Almost every time I zone the game window stops updating. The game doesn't crash: I can still move in the game or even zone again, but nothing appears on screen. Game restart allows me to continue, but it's annoying enough to make the game unplayable.

I would like to know if anyone else has run into this problem. Even if you don't have this problem let me know please.

Btw. the new shop interface seems to work just fine.

Old, unrelated problems:
- Mouse doesn't work properly. raw3.patch seemingly fixes it, but during extensive play there are still some minor input problems (especially with ClickSaver)
- Sounds and/or battle musics were somehow buggy. Also the game crashed randomly. I "fixed" these problems by setting "Battle-music" to "off" and disabling sound completely. (The game was 100% stable after this change.)

Gentoo / Linux 3.4.4 / Wine 1.5.7 / RadeonHD 5650 Gallium Mesa 8.0.3 / Alsa audio
RE: AO 18.5.0
by pahl on Tuesday July 10th 2012, 3:46
After some more testing, it looks like the problem is related to AMD Gallium 3D hardware acceleration. The problem disappears if I do LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 or if I switch to the integrated Intel GPU on the exact same system. Unfortunately, neither solution is acceptable.

Now using Wine 1.5.8 and Mesa-git.
RE: AO 18.5.0
by pahl on Saturday July 14th 2012, 16:28
I now think this problem doesn't have anything to do with the Anarchy Online 18.5 patch after all. Sorry about the noise. Instead it was triggered by the "Show commercial billboards" setting which is forced on for free users, but for paid users it's off by default. (I switched to free account during the patch.)

Also I forgot Wine uses 32-bit Mesa and thus I was in fact using old Mesa 7.11.2. So now I really upgraded Mesa to the latest git version: The bug still exists, but it's no longer an issue. It seems to trigger only once after starting the game, and it's possible the get the screen back by minimizing and restoring the game window within the Wine Desktop -- a solution which didn't work with Mesa 7.11.2.
RE: AO 18.5.0
by Marc on Sunday July 15th 2012, 12:38
Thanks for the info. I was having the same problem and the commericals was the ticket. I found that if you started AO and then switched to another desktop and deleted the Adcache folder in your AO directory the problem seems to not occur.
Didn't need IE to patch/view content
by Feldspar on Friday January 27th 2012, 17:33
Just installed the game to a clean wineprefix, and the only think I needed was vcrun2005 due to an unimplemented function in msvcp80.dll that would cause the launcher to crash after excepting the EULA.

I didn't need ie anything to patch or view content in the launcher.

vcrun2005 needed for Anarchy Online 18.4
by Zootal on Wednesday December 14th 2011, 23:51
I didn't see this anywhere, so thought I'd mention it.

I can't patch wine with the mouse patch - I get "gcc failed" when running make install. Does Wine 1.3.33 not need this patch, or is the patch not compatible with this version of wine? I'm guessing the former, as once I got the game working it seemed to work fine.

Installed ie6 just fine.
Installed AOline fine.
Run. Patches itself to 18.4
After patching, it immediately crashes: "The program anarchy.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close"

In the console I see.

This is interesting.
With wine 1.3.27 and the mouse patch the game works but only the first time, or every time you create a new character.

Has anyone experienced something similar?
Was anyone able to play the game lately?

Anarchy Online mostly works in Wine version 1.2.2 and 1.3.4 through 1.3.6 if you apply the patches from these two bug reports: bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25206 and bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25654 and you do not open the new in-game store.

wine 1.3.3, Sabayon 5/64bit, AO 18.3.13

On a machine which meets comes in between the minimum specs and the requirements this game will not play full-screen unless a new toon is being created. Otherwise it will always time-out during connecting.

Oddly it will run at 1280x800 *WINDOWED* but cannot connect at 1280x800 fullscreen...

It does not appear to be a problem in Wine, unless it has to do with how the games startup pegs one core at 100% until the loading screen finally shows up... However, I did not have problems with older versions of Wine and older versions of the game - and that on an older machine.

wine-1.2-rc1
ubuntu 10.04

1
Setup wineconfig to emulate desktop.
Select Alsa for sound at wineconfig, will work with pulseaudio.

2
Remember to install ie6 with winetricks, so you will be able to patch by using AO windowed patcher, not manually.

3
Setup AO to use fullscreen.
Alternatively
you can try a windowed resolution lower than your desktop, may be configure it manually, otherwise will give error. I didnt try windowed, its just a tip.

PS.: a playonlinux entry would be cool :)

when i try to move forward my char kinda gets stuck and moves veery slowly until I hit the keys for "left" and "right" a few times.

autorun works just fine

but in fact its very hard to play like this in a professional way

AO: 18.1.1

also tried with clean wineprefix
RE: moving forward
by malic on Tuesday June 30th 2009, 14:08
I think it's related to the new Xorg included in recent distribution.

I have the problem on Ubuntu 9.04 using Wine 1.1.24 using Nvidia driver v185.18.14.

When you press the "go forward" key, you char seems to stop and run and stop and run very fast and move very slowly.

There is a workaround for this.

Open a terminal and press "xset r off" to remove any key repeat management. Very annoying when you type text but the char moves as normal.
Enter "xset r on" in a terminal when you're done with the game.

Window mode
by Brenton on Thursday May 7th 2009, 15:39
been trying to get this working with out avial. would love to have it in order to use Clicksaver with a but more ease.

Full screen mode works great but if I try to use window it goes to black sceen where it hangs then crashes. I don't get any crash report so do not know what is causing the crash.

updated my wine to 1.1.20 to see if that would resolve the issue but still having the same issues.

running wine on Ubuntu 8.04 at this time with a Nvidia restricted drivers.

had some one look at my xorg.conf file and it appears to be in order.

tried different device settings in the game and different resolutions only difference I find is that the black screen will last longer before crashing.

anyideas ?

LE Mish Room
by Zach on Friday December 12th 2008, 1:18
Was wondering if anyone else has had a problem in the LE missions, theres one room that I crash in over and over. Even standing in the doorway = Client Crash.

The room doesn't even look like anything spectacular.
RE: LE Mish Room
by pahl on Saturday February 28th 2009, 10:44
YES! I just ran into this problem. It's very annoying because client crashes the second you log in. I have tried pretty much everything I can think of and it always crashes. It happens with both Ati and Nvidia cards (Tested with 1.1.15 and Wine git).

I hope it's just one specific room that doesn't show up too often. It's the room right after entrance, right? I did at least 3 LE missions earlier and didn't have any problems.

I know I'm probably stupid and missed something but i got this error when anarchy tries to load the game,"The error was: Failed during retry to create the z-buffer DDERR_INVALIDPARAMS" I realize it has something to do with direct draw, which I would assume that has to do with Wine. I am on Wine 1.1.2 on the Hardy version of Ubuntu. Im just learning this stuff so be gentle.

Hint: Slow performance
by Bobbie the Bob on Monday April 21st 2008, 7:40
Hello!

In case you get a lot of warnings while running AO (for example when you are an owner of a Geforce4 4200), you can redirect these warnings using:

./Anarchy.exe >/dev/null 1>/dev/null 2>/dev/null

In my case these redirections even double the frame rate!
RE: Hint: Slow performance
by Bobbie the Bob on Monday April 21st 2008, 7:49
oh, it's supposed to be:

./Anarchy.exe >/dev/null 2>/dev/null
RE: Hint: Slow performance
by Steffen Rilk on Monday November 24th 2008, 15:56
WINEDEBUG=-all wine ./Anarchy.exe >/dev/null 2>&1
is pipeing all output to null device , plus redirecting error msg to stdio which then will also go to null device , plus no debug from wine itself, this should be the prefered way i guess

Doh, this was in reply to:

Sometimes randomly when I am walking through a town, the client will just crash out of no where. Just as if it had seen fog. I have come to the conclusion that when I see a certain profession using a certain buff, that effect makes the client use fog. Fog crashes the client, and therefore this does too.

I'm assuming it's fog because it gives the same output errors as fog. I had to disable tracers to get it to work correctly.

It runs smooth untill i enter certain areas, such as borealis, player city shop room, apf place's bridge. my fps drops to 0 or near.

yet in OA for example my fps is steady and theres no visible laggyness. I can do alien playfield raid with 40+ people on screen and still runs smoothly, but when ever i turn my view on a building in borealis with no other people on screen my fps just drops!

Anyone else had this problem? and anyone got a clue how to fix it? i'd hate to have to go back to using M$ software :(

I don't know what the problem is, but it doesn't matter if your using wine or windows, the same thing happens.
RE: Low fps in certain areas?
by Marcel Krause on Friday March 28th 2008, 13:34
I got the same issue with fps dropping at APF, Bore and player shops. The only solution for this I have is to use cedega, as it doesn't suffer from the slowdowns at all.

I'd rather like to use wine (as I'm not a big supporter of cedega), but well, let's hope it gets fixed at some point.

Yeah with me the same in borealis and I don't wanna use cedega :(

by Ryan on Monday October 14th 2013, 13:14
Yes I'm replying to an old post, but...

I found changing the below values increased framerates in all areas.
glsl=enabled
multisampling=enabled
orm=fbo
psm=enabled

These were settings for my specific computer/distro/wine version. You may need to adjust for yours. Most of these should be set to the default values but on my install they were not.

More experimenting shows that setting d3x9_42 (insert any version you like) in winecfg to builtin on new versions of wine (1.6+) fix a good deal of this problem. May work with older versions.
Fog From nowhere?
by Lee on Saturday January 12th 2008, 16:28
Sometimes randomly when I am walking through a town, the client will just crash out of no where. Just as if it had seen fog. I have come to the conclusion that when I see a certain profession using a certain buff, that effect makes the client use fog. Fog crashes the client, and therefore this does too.

I'm assuming it's fog because it gives the same output errors as fog. I had to disable tracers to get it to work correctly.
RE: Fog From nowhere?
by Lee on Sunday January 13th 2008, 12:17
I apologize, disabling the tracers did not fix the problem, the client still crashes whenever I see a specific buff. I still do not know which buff this is.

I am also getting this same thing nut with one difference, it will also happen on zone.

Black screen on Starting
by Lars on Monday November 26th 2007, 8:43
Everytime, I try to start Anarchy Online. I get this problem:

1. First, I click the link on my desktop.
2. Click Accept, and go to the login screen.
3. I put in my Account name and Pass and press Enter.
4. I choose my Character and press Ok
!5. The login screen closes, and I get the screen from AO, where it normally should run. And it is black.
(Screenshot: img164.imageshack.us/img164/3937/blackscreenvs0.png)

I have sound though, so that's not a problem, but maybe useful to help. The problem is this black screen.

I have no idea what is happening here, I tried a few things, but nothing helped so far.

Version AO: 17.6.4
Version Wine: 0.9.45 (For running Warcraft 3) and I think also the 0.9.49.

Hope someone can help me out, because I enjoy(ed) playing AO for a long time.

hum the screen shot looks like you are playing in window mode

this mode does not really work in WINE well... if you are using windowed then switch to full screen.
RE: Black screen on Starting
by Brenton on Sunday December 9th 2007, 22:17
oh also check you're glxinfo in terminal and make sure you have direct rendering set as yes if not you may need to get the proper video card drivers installed. getting this depends on the build of linux you have.

I was getting an error saying something about permissions and how it couldnt save patches but now it wont even open the application at all. For a while it seemed as though it was going to work but then it all just closed. I am running wine 0.9.44 and I just downloaded AO yesterday if that has anything to do with it. I'm fairly new to linux so im not exactly sure how to do much of anything but I checked faq's and everything and I still can't seem to find any answers. please help me out here.
RE:
by Rudolf Kastl on Friday August 31st 2007, 2:47
you were unfortunate to start playing ao on linux exactly when a new patch in ao broke the patching on wine.

i have been able to get it to patch by downloading the patch.exe manually and throwing a native dll in there. after that i set the game version up manually and got it to work. maybe someone else who can verify those steps can add a small how to for it because unfortunately i dont really have the time to recheck.

it would also help to actually submit a bugreport.
RE:
by Jon on Thursday September 6th 2007, 0:51
I downloaded the patch.exe manually but when i go to use it, it asks for the AO directory and it doesnt show up on the list due to the fact that the wine folder is hidden. I also tried downloading the components manually and putting them in the patches folder but then i get "unsupported operation." Is there something else I need or am i doing this completely wrong?
17.5.3 Patch
by Brenton on Friday August 24th 2007, 20:20
there seems to be a issue with the AOpatcher when trying to path to 17.5.3

get the error "An unsupported operation was attempted." when patcher opens after that it will close up with out patching

also tried to patch with the supplied .exe file but this will close out after the files are downloaded to the c:/windows/temp folder.

some people have found copying the install over from the Windows partition but I'd like to see if we can find a way to do this from wine.

RE: 17.5.3 Patch
by Tomasz on Saturday August 25th 2007, 4:12
I have the same problem.

Also tried to patch with the supplied *.exe files and found out, that patching was closing out after downloading the files to the temp folder because mfc42.dll was missing in my /.wine/drive_c/windows/system32 dir. Simply copied the file into that directory and patching went on. However, the same error occured ("An unsupported operation was attempted").
RE: 17.5.3 Patch
by Antoine Chavasse on Saturday September 29th 2007, 15:27
I don't know yet if there are any side effect, but I used the previous version of AnarchyPatcher.exe (the one from 17.5.1) to apply the 17.5.3 patch, and it seems to have worked.

To do this, copy the older AnarchyPatcher.exe (it may work with an even older version, I don't know what it is they keep changing in the patcher all the time) over the current one.

However, if you start the game normally, the launcher will detect the patcher is not the latest version and will redownload it automatically.
To avoid this, the patcher needs to be started directly from the command line, this way:

$ cd
$ wine AnarchyPatcher.exe 17.5.3_EP1

The "17.5.3_EP1" parameter is to simulate running the patcher from the launcher, otherwise it would just run the launcher instead.
RE: 17.5.3 Patch
by Antoine Chavasse on Saturday September 29th 2007, 15:29
Instead of just "cd", I intended to write: cd in your anarchy online directory, most likely ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Funcom/Anarchy\ Online
RE: 17.5.3 Patch
by Pietro Fontana on Tuesday November 27th 2007, 13:03
I solved the problem in this way:

1) Download the 17.5.1-17.5.2 patcher from here (not the EP1 if you have free account) ftp.funcom.com/cd/patches/
This is necessary for take a working AnarchyPatcher.exe

2) Download the 17.5.2-17.5.3 patcher

3) In you AO install folder, rename AnarchyPatcher.exe in .original

4) Launch the AOPatch_v17.5.1-v17.5.2.exe, go ahead until it tell you where to install. Leave the windows alone and with file manager go to your .wine/drive_c/windows/temp and you will notice a folder that end with ~tmp. Inside you will find AnarchyPatcher.exe and CopyPatcher.exe. Copy it in your AO folder and close the installation windows.

5) Launch the AOPatch_v17.5.2-v17.5.3.exe, go ahead until it tell you where to install. Leave the windows alone and with file manager go to your .wine/drive_c/windows/temp and you will notice a folder that end with ~tmp. Inside you will find the a folder called "Patches". Copy it in your AO folder and close the installation windows.

6) In you AO install folder, open terminal and write: wine AnarchyPatcher.exe. Go on and it will install the patch

Sadly you had to do this with all the patch until the latest version. Don't run Anarchy otherwise it will overwrite your version of the Anarchy patcher and you have to redo all the step.
RE: 17.5.3 Patch
by Pietro Fontana on Tuesday November 27th 2007, 13:18
Forgive my previous post, the better and faster solution is this:

1) Download the 17.5.1-17.5.2 patcher from here (not the EP1 if you have free account) ftp.funcom.com/cd/patches/
This is necessary for take a working AnarchyPatcher.exe

2) Launch the AOPatch_v17.5.1-v17.5.2.exe, go ahead until it tell you where to install. Leave the windows alone and with file manager go to your .wine/drive_c/windows/temp and you will notice a folder that end with ~tmp. Inside you will find AnarchyPatcher.exe and CopyPatcher.exe. Copy it in your AO folder and close the installation windows.

3) In you AO install folder, open terminal and write: wine AnarchyPatcher.exe "target version". Do this until the latest patch. If the problem come again just redo the step or save a copy of AnarchyPatcher.exe take from the 17.5.1 in another place so overwrite the corrupted one is more fast.

Patcher
by Evil on Tuesday July 17th 2007, 0:12
I'm not sure if anyone else is having this issue, but something appears to be haywire with the patcher here.

I haven't tested AO in a long time, so when I started it, it started patching 17.2 -> 17.4.1. It got up to 17.4 normally, and then exited, saying that I needed to rerun the patcher to get to the server level.

Everytime I re-ran the patcher, it created an AnarchyPatcher.err saying that the patcher file didn't match the checksum, at which point it copied it from PatchesUndo (basically replacing the patcher with the same version, over and over).

Thinking the patcher was corrupt, I renamed the copy in PatchesUndo and re-ran. This causes it to re-download the patcher at startup (just as I had hoped). Unfortunately, it complains that this version also fails the checksum. :\

If no one else is having the issue, I'll try to completely reinstall AO when I have the time. This testing is under the current .9.41 release, btw.
RE: Patcher
by Evil on Tuesday July 17th 2007, 0:13
btw, when I say "patcher file", I actually meant AnarchyPatcher.exe; it's the patcher itself that it claims does not match the checksum.

RE:

It does work here in fullscreen mode, windowed mode does not work(the way you describe).

by Mike on Sunday June 3rd 2007, 11:20
When running fullscreen, (true fullscreen...) I can't use my keyboard, but everything else works. The game runs fine in every other mode, looks good, plays well, but if I let the game itself run the window my keyboard is still active on the terminal window I used to launch it rather than the game window.
RE:
by Mike on Thursday June 7th 2007, 19:46
Ok, having upgraded to the latest debian packages of wine, I am having the same problem (As of June 7, 2007). I can't run it full screen and have the keyboard work, nor can I run a companion program called clicksaver.
RE:
by Mike on Saturday June 16th 2007, 17:09
Ok, when running with cedega I can get full screen and the keyboard works, although I am not sure what if anything cedega has to do with Wine, but at least now I know this is possible.

Still would like to get AO and clicksaver running at the same time. Although any time I run this with wine and try to launch something else it isn't working.
Playable, works very well
by S on Friday May 25th 2007, 19:53
I'm running wine 0.9.37 on an AMD x2 3800 and Geforce 7600GS. Everything works out fine with all visual quality options set on max. The FPS dips down to about 10 when loading areas heavy in polygons/people (ie. Borealis), but quickly hops back up to 30 after loading up.

The game is pretty suspectible to lag, which makes combat especially difficult. It can't be helped. Lag is more or less equal to windows AO, except zoning works mysteriously faster for me through wine. Console gets spammed with one message all the time while running:

fixme:d3d:IWineD3DDeviceImpl_ValidateDevice (0x172f60) : stub

I found one game-crashing bug while testing around. With right click to the main chat window and choosing "New window" the game hangs and has to be killed to get it vanish. It also appears through "Chat config" choice and trying "Clone window" from there. So creating a new in-game window seems to be the cause of this.

Every window in AO has a little button at the top right corner that lets you remove the transparency, if that is your problem. Other than that, I can't see anything wrong with the shots.
low fps
by jano haluska on Sunday March 11th 2007, 14:36
Hi, I have problem with play in main Omni city, game is very slow. When I logged in the shop everything was allright, nice and fast, but when I stepped out of the door game went down to 3fps. I tried to wait few minutes to load up, but it was still very slow. (before when I tried on windows it was running fine).
Game also had some troubles with displaying in the Omni city, its kinda messed up: bin.mypage.sk/FILES/Anarchy-meessed.jpg

I'm using wine 0.9.32 on Ubuntu 6.06, with Anarchy Online 17.1.2. I have 2GHz PC with 512 ram and geForce so it should be running allrighty.

Do you have some idea how to tune wine to run better ?
RE: low fps
by Lee on Sunday January 13th 2008, 13:58
Anarchy needs a very fast internet speed to play. It has to load each piece of clothing, every implant, every nano, every piece of every person separately, and then check each one to make sure it's right. When you have a lot of people, that would obviously slow it down. I believe that is the only reason it runs slowly.
patching - graphic driver howto
by jano haluska on Sunday March 11th 2007, 14:10
Hello

I had lots of troubles when I was patching downloaded 16.something to current 17.1.2. Patch went allright, but after patching I saw that nothing was patched and I still had version 16.something.

Reason: I did not choose graphic driver properly. After selecting it patch went allright and all was good.

How to set driver: I saw some comments to edit the Main.cfg and add there name of device. This does not work for me. Alot easier it was as written in other comments - select driver when requested, then press space, then press Ok - and it works!
Random crashes with 17.0.0 series
by Seb on Friday February 16th 2007, 13:11
I can't see the output from the terminal or from wineconsole because Anarchy.exe locks up X when it freezes. Where is wine's log file?! The game runs fine visualy, but crashes with no predictability. Somtimes the game runs fine for several hours, but most of the time it crashes within 30 seconds of logging in.

Solutions tried:
-removing bink videos from Mediacache folder and "-w"ing
-ALSA module is not enabled
-disabling all options under the "Enviroment" settings ingame

Video drivers are working properly because I'm getting 20-30 FPS outdoors. As far as I can tell the crashes have nothing to do with where I am ingame at the time.

System:
Gentoo Linux
Wine 0.9.29
Xorg 7.1.1
WM: Enlightenment dr17 (also tried Gnome, and no WM at all)
opengl drivers: nvidia binary drivers.

Problem apparently fixed. AO doesn't like being run remoteley from another directory. I had a link in my launcher bar that was doing

"cd /home/seb/AO && wine Anarchy.exe"

while the game loaded, it wouldn't stay up for very long. Running the game from the terminal in the AO directory seems to solve this problem. For anybody wondering how to capture Wine's output when a game is crashing X with it do this:

I really need to reinstall ?

And when I use "winecfg" to be able to add an application, whan I close the windows and re open it, the application I just added (Anarchy.exe for example) has disapear ...

Thanks

I was having the same errors. The fix for me was to make sure to run it from the Anarchy Online folder.

wine /windows/c/Program Files/Funcom/Anarchy\ Online/Anarchy.exe

does not work but

cd /windows/c/Program Files/Funcom/Anarchy\ Online/
wine Anarchy.exe

does work

You can also create a menu item and set the work path to the Anarchy Online fold path.

Umm...
I hit the same obstacle. Only your advice doesn't seem to help :(

Sad.

Config generated by the game is below.
GfxDeviceName matches what's displayed. There is a GfxDevice whis is a silly looking string.
Any ideas? (Debian SID wine 0.9.19)

ChatFontSize 140^M

DisplayBitsPerPixel 32^M
DisplayHeight 864^M
DisplayWidth 1152^M

The ^M are the windows newline characters. Pretty weird, and might not be a problem.. but then again it could. Make a backup of your file and remove the strange ^M things.

The GfxDevice is strange, i don't even have it in my config. Try remove that line and start the game again, you never know.

Unfortunately i can't replicate your problem since i'm not running Wine for Anarchy Online anymore, but i do like to keep supporting it and might do a new checkout in one of the upcoming Wine versions to see if it still runs and what changed.

I tried the config with only one line in it, the GfxDeviceName.
When the app writes the config back it adds all the other lines, and the ^M line endings... That is to be expected I think the game being developed for Windows. Their config parser prob expects it to be that way too.

I also tried without ^Ms, but I'll test it again tonight.
I don't have the game in my office :-D

did the test. No luck :(
Any ideas?

That lot of zeroes looks like a device identifier in windows. Maybe the configurator wants to obtain such information about the controller it finds and cannot.

A solution to the bink crash problem:

cd AO_directory
rm -rf ./mediacache/*
chmod -w ./mediacache

I heard that replacing the .bnk files would stop the movies from showing up. Since I dont play on my free play account (Only the paid one ;)), I am not sure if it is true.

Look here anyway:

Thats where I got it from.
