Installation from original retail CD, update/patch to most recent version, and gameplay work as in windows. Less graphical clipping errors (ie., none) than under Windows itself, overall the game runs a bit smoother and faster.
It does not matter which Windows version you choose, Project Eden runs in anything from 98 to XP (Vista not tried; 95 too old).
3D positioning sound works, but sometimes has a strange focus
somewhere in the vicinity of the current actor (noticeable when you use 5.1/6.1/7.1 surround systems). Eg. Control's voice
shifts its direction depending on where you look, environmental sounds
sometimes start, stop or shift location abruptly. Setting the sound option manually to "hardware" in Eden's .ini file (the config dialog in the game won't let you toggle this) corrects all of this.
What does not
Unless a native Windows DirectX is installed, no videos will be shown in the game; neither the intro, nor the two videos in the game.
Also. networking does not work with the builtin Wine .dlls ("check your network settings"). Installing DirectX9.0c helps, but leaving the network mode from a running game tends to freeze Wine while Eden tries to transfer the server to another player.
What was not tested
One of the best tactical adventure games ever. And --- against all my expectations based on various MS-Windows versions --- it runs in Wine. If you don't need the network mode and can live with those three missing videos, Project Eden runs out of the box, almost flawlessly. Get it. Run it. Love it.
