The most important thing to know:

After starting DC++ go to File >> Settings..., select 'Advanced' in the left side of the dialog box and uncheck the 'Show progress bars for transfers' option. Otherwise, the program will crash whenever you start downloading a file.

Open the Settings window and do the following

Choose 'Appearance' and disable 'Minimize to tray'
Choose 'Advanced' and disable 'Show progress bars for transfers
