What works

The game itself

Audio (plays too fast, 30 second's dialogue lasts roughly 3 to 8 seconds)

Minigames (even with the audio speeding up some of the animation. Some of them may hic a bit at the begining but they retain normal speed after that short hic)

Fullscreen (despite it being limited to 640x480)

Dialog

Spell Effects

What does not

The movies do not display (the audio plays, and it takes a while to load)

The sounds during gameplay is also incredibly out of sync (changing to emulation almost slows the audio down enough to sound inteligent, The hardware accelaration impacts on the audio's speed)

Workarounds

What was not tested

I didn't play very far, but then again, everything except the movies and the audio ran flawlessly

Additional Comments

if it's the first time running, you'll be greeted with a blank screen that'll take a while to pass, you should hear some audio after a while. This should repeat about 3 times before you see the main menu, afterwards those movies won't play.

HowTo / Notes

How to Install?

Take care, since this is a two-cd installation, you need to start the installation not from within the /media/cdrom folder, but rather from /media/ with the command 'wine cdrom/AUTORUN.EXE'.

If you don't, you won't be able to unmount the CD in order to insert the second one.

black screen and hang after first intro movie? Use these settings
by Claudio on Wednesday December 17th 2014, 12:57
I got a black screen and a hang when trying to reinstall this old game.

I used regedit and changed some Direct3D settings, and got forward.
These are the settings I changed (I also advertised only 1024 MB of VideoMemory as you see as the last key).

Be aware that these settings are NOT ok for most recent games. Use them for this game only.

Use regedit and set the following Direct3D key strings:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D\

DirectDrawRenderer gdi
Multisampling disabled
OffscreenRenderingMode pbuffer
RenderTargetLockMode disabled
StrictDrawOrdering enabled
UseGLSL disabled
VideoMemorySize 1024
Running better than XP?
by Brian Tubb on Thursday August 28th 2008, 0:40
My brother recommended that I try this game so I gave it a whirl a few years back. Sadly, It would crash under XP when you try to fight a certain enemy.

I cannot remember the enemies name, but it is a flying beast and could best be described as a Wyvern. Has anyone seen if this game under Wine can get past that point? If so, it is successfully run better under Wine than Windows XP.

That's a dragon and you encounter it near the very end. I will check when I find time!

In Windows XP, the game would crash in the hall with all of the vaults. But in Wine, it did not crash.

I receive the error above when I try to start QFG5 in WINE. Has anybody seen this?
