Working OK with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and PlayOnLinux 4.3.4 (Wine v5.17)
by JJ Courage on Thursday January 23rd 2025, 16:25
Installed via original installation CDs (CD1) and own legitimate serial number, bought at launch.
Was running in a Windows XP VM (Virtualbox) having failed for years to get it to work in Wine or PlayOnLinux, but finally (!) managed to find a solution over a few hours today.
Copied all files from Corel X3 official install media, CD1 (of 3) into a folder under Windows 11.
Labelled this “CorelX3_install”.
Moved this folder into /home/Downloads (i.e. Linux’ ext4 filesystem) to avoid possible PlayOnLinux not liking installs from ntfs filesystems.

For years I have been running in a Windows XP VM (Virtualbox), but finally (!) managed to find a solution over a few hours today using the new comments above (thanks!).
Copied all files from the original Corel X3 official install media i.e. CD1 (of 3), into a folder, transfer into /home/Downloads.
All attempts at using Wine and Winetricks failed, I just couldn't figure it out.
Switched to: PlayOnLinux v4.3.4 (latest install from Ubuntu Discover centre).
Create a “32 bits” (sic) PlayOnLinux VirtualDrive, I labelled it ‘CorelX3’
In PlayOnLinux’s ‘Configure’ menu for this VirtualDrive → Wine Configure
Wait several seconds for a Windows-style dialogue to appear.
Applications tab: Ensure at bottom, Windows Version = Windows 10
Libraries tab: Add (11 in total)
msvcr90, msxml3, msxml4, ole32, oleaut32, msi, gdiplus, riched20, riched30, kernelbase, rpcrt4
For each of these, once installed, click on each and Edit: choose “Built-in and Native” option.
Go to PlayOnLinux main menu again, choose Install.
Go to the CGS13 folder within Corel X3 CD1 install media, and choose the Setup.exe (not the Autosetup). Go through all the prompts, add your serial number, select the three programs: Corel Draw/Photopaint/Capture (leave unchecked the defunct Yahoo toolbar spam dialog, obviously) and essentially do a full install.
IMPORTANT STEP! ->
The Corel X3 setup program will appear to crash and fail, but DO NOT close it, or quit it by clicking any button in its dialogue/window.
Go to a terminal: ‘ps aux’, find its processID and/or find a way to Ctrl+C and Kill it (force quit) this Corel X3 setup program.
This is VERY IMPORTANT – if you quit it normally it will DELETE all the Corel X3 program files it has just installed for you! This had me totally confused, even after being warned by the comments above, but I finally figured out what was going on.
From within PlayOnLinux, create a shortcut from your newly installed CorelDRW.exe and CorelPP.exe programs, onto your Ubuntu (Kubuntu) desktop, and… double click shortcut to launch! If on the first attempt either Draw or Photopaint crashes, do not despair. Force quit again, or… reboot (or logout) your computer and try again. Photopaint worked for me immediately, CorelDRW.exe required a force quit and a relaunch.

Set WINE to 5 in playonlinux
Set Windows version to WIN10
Set msvcr90,msxml4, msxml6,ole32,oleaut32,riched32,rpcrt4 to (builtin,native).
After that opening X3 13 files works fine! Someone coplained before that they crashed the app and that was true.
