What works

Most of the important things: installation and uninstallation, gameplay, graphics, sound effects, music, keyboard and joystick control, help, restart, reset, pause, exit, special stage mode...

What does not

The main problem is probably fullscreen mode. Trying to enter fullscreen mode always causes a crash when using a virtual desktop, and it also causes a crash outside a virtual desktop if 320x240 resolution is not available. (Windows upscales it to the more widely supported 640x480 in fullscreen mode, but Wine doesn't.)

To install the game successfully, Windows version needs to be set to Windows 98 in winecfg. The installer seems to crash silently if you choose to install DirectX, though this doesn't have any effect on the game. The installer doesn't blank the screen while showing the Expert Software animation like it does in Windows, but it does make the mouse cursor invisible while the animation is displayed...

The installer doesn't create any program links in the start menu. Run the file RUNSONIC.EXE in the program folder to make the game start like it does in Windows. The buttons on the launcher and sound test are very narrow, though this can be fixed by running winetricks comctl32.

The game window will have no title bar or border unless "allow the window manager to decorate the windows" is unchecked in winecfg.
