Microsoft Word Viewer

Word Viewer 2003 (Release Date: December 15, 2004) is the successor of Word Viewer 97/2000 and used to display, print and copy from Word documents (or rtf or regular text documents).

Note that plain Word Viewer 2003 is no longer available from Microsoft. The current download link installs the installs the 2007 version, which is really the 2003 version with SP1 applied.   You can tell which version you have by the name of the downloaded file:

  • wdviewer.exe is the filename for the Word Viewer 2003 installer
  • wordview_en-us.exe is the filename for the current (2007) version

What works

I had installed Word Viewer 2003 using a previous version of WINE by running setup from the temporary directory.

When run Word Viewer displays a dialog to select a file to display.

What does not

When I use the location shortcuts in the file selector, I get an error that says "Can't access this folder. Path is too long." When I browser for my file folder by folder after selecting Z: from the drop-down box, I do not get this error.

Regardless of how I open the file (double-clicking or pressing the "open" button), Word Viewer hangs (mouse cursor changes to an hour glass and stays that way) and eventually crashes.

When I try to open the file again, I get a message: "The document '...' caused a serious error the last time it was opened. You may continue opening it or perform data recovery by clicking 'Recover Data'. Clicking 'Recover Data' will extract text out of your document but all formatting and pictures will be lost." Clicking anything other than cancel causes the same freeze and crash routine.

The file opens in both Abiword and OpenOffice.org, but display with incorrect formatting. The file opens without problems in Word Viewer running under Windows 2000.
