What works

  • The core game. I played the game for about an hour and experienced only one crash; I went to different continents, etc. and it seemed to work fine.
  • Downloading and patching. I actually used the "free" PlanetSide download, and it pulled down all 4 GiB of the game just fine, installed it properly, and launched it. (Note that you can't just run planetside.exe; you have to run launchpad.exe with the parameter "/game:planetside", and since you're probably doing this at a UNIX prompt you have to do "wine planetside.exe -- /game:planetside".)

What does not

  • Lots of stuff in the LaunchPad application you have to use to launch PlanetSide looks broken, with text not refreshing properly. That said, a minimize and maximise usually refreshes at least the buttons until you can click through them.
  • There are texture issues in the game. Nothing that keeps it from being playable, but they are quite noticeable.
  • The game exhibits strange resolution-change issues at the start; it really wants to run in a 640x480 window, even though the game itself defaults to 1024x768. This is easily "fixable" by editing your xorg.conf to have 1024x768 as the ONLY choosable resolution; that's not a particularly great long-term solution, however.
  • I had problems signing up through LaunchPad, but it could have been because I didn't have the Gecko Web applet installed at the time.
  • It will also not work properly if you haven't run wineprefixcreate.

What was not tested

  • Any play past what a clueless newbie can see in the first hour or so.
  • I'm not sure if the draw distance is too far or too short, having never played the game in native Windows. It feels too short, but that could just be the game engine.

Additional Comments

All of the above said, I'm totally surprised that this game "just works" with 0.9.18. Pretty amazing, in my opinion.

HowTo / Notes

Resolving black screen (err:d3d_surface GL_INVALID_ENUM)

On Gentoo systems, PlanetSide will not work out of the box due to a missing Mesa library (note: if you are using proprietary AMD or NVIDIA graphics drivers, you probably won't need to worry about this) . Here are the steps and triage I used to debug the issues I was having.

Upon start, the PlanetSide window would launch, sound would be heard, but nothing would get drawn. The console was being spammed with messages similar to:

err:d3d_surface:surface_upload_data >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_ENUM (0x500) from glTexSubImage2D @ surface.c / 2369

This search led me to this bug which says that is required for PlanetSide to load textures. To verify that this was in fact the missing library, I ran: MESA_DEBUG=1 wine LaunchPad.exe and looked for the error: Mesa warning: couldn't open, software DXTn compression/decompression unavailable. This appeared and I resolved the problem by running emerge -va media-libs/libtxc_dxtn (for Debian/Ubuntu run apt-get install libtxc-dxtn-s2tc). I hope this resolves most people's problems with this specific issue.
