What works

  • sound
  • videos & rotating animations (with native .dll, see below)
  • switching resolutions: 1024x768, 800x600 - menus are 640x480

What does not

  • Viewing the manual (.hlp file, bug 17681). View the file on your friend's PC to learn how to perform stunts.
  • Intaller hangs with ALSA sound, OSS works (bug 15030)
  • Needs a nocd patch (bug 219, SafeDisk copy protection)
    Remove c:\windows\drivers\SECDRV.SYS and associated registry entry
    [HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Secdrv]
    after installation to avoid disturbing wine.
  • Requires the Intel Indeo 5 codec or crashes, although the installer doesn't mention this.  Used for the intro videos and for the race type selection mini TV screen. Install using
    winetricks icodecs
  • Needs native DLLs: amstream.dll and quartz.dll
    WINEDLLOVERRIDES=amstream=n wine regsvr32 amstream.dll
    Then use winecfg to define a dll override for mcm2 or run as
    WINEDLLOVERRIDES='amstream=n;quartz=n' wine MCM2.EXE
    Otherwise the game crashes at start, trying to display the intro videos (bug 17836).

Additional Comments

As reported by other testers, there is significant input lag in the menus (bug 17234, at least with an Intel Xorg driver). Furthermore, the mouse freezes for a few seconds when moving from one menu to another. Be patient and don't give up, the race works without lag. => No gold rating. Most graphical glitches in the menus, except for one horizontal line are gone in 1.1.22. There's still a slight change of colour where the mouse moves. This is one of the few wine applications that may lock up my machine when run on Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 instead of 8.10.
