What works

  • Installer
  • 'Characters' Section (Including 'Search and Sort' section and compounds for each character)
  • Japanese -> English lookup
  • English -> Japanese lookup
  • Copying Characters and compounds (must hover and then click one of the copy options)
  • Pop-up boxes when hovering over words/compounds, which show information about the kanji (including readings etc.)
  • Editor/Translator - Works the same as in Windows
  • Vocabulary lists by double-clicking a word or phrase in dictionary section and clicking 'Add to Vocabulary')
Basically, the general function for which Wakan is used for work the same as in Windows XP SP2.

What does not

  • Single Right click on word/phrase in dictionary mode auto-adding/replacing clipboard.
  • 'SC' button, which under Windows XP SP2 allows the user to hover over Japanese text outside Wakan and a pop-up box shows detail about the word/compound.

Workarounds

What was not tested

  • Installation in other languages
  • Importing extra databases (such as the examples database or JLPT Vocab database)
  • Saving Editor/Translator content and the Vocabulary lists that the user can make to external files.

Additional Comments

From my point of view, Wakan works flawlessly. However: Make sure that Japanese support is FULLY installed on your computer, and MS Gothic is set as basically the default font for this program, and MS Mincho is installed also. (in Wakan: Tools -> Settings -> Fonts and then set fonts to MS Mincho or MS Gothic for Japanese, you will have to find a good font for Chinese) Wakan works basically the same as in Windows XP SP2.

HowTo / Notes

HOWTO
Before you install wakan copy from a Windows installation (or from somewhere over the internet) to your local fonts dir (~/.wine/drive_c/Windows/Fonts) these fonts: 'mingliu.ttc', 'msmincho.ttc', 'msgothic.ttc', and 'simsun.ttc' - they are required in order to display the kanji and the kana. After you install and run the program for first time the application will start a bug message would pop up with three options: 'Quit', 'Send e-mail' or 'Countinue'. You need to click in rapid succession 'Countinue' Several times (in my case arround ten) in order to get the past the bug message and start the application. This issue occurs only during the first run and it will not bother you after that.
