What works

Installing the downloaded demo, menus, the game itself (in general), sound and music.

What does not

The keyboard doesn't operate normally - when you hold a key binded for a continous action (e.g. moving forward) it works for some two seconds and then the character will start to jitter instead of actually moving so you will need to release the key and press it once again to move further. Actually this is the most serious problem because such "keyboard lags" will frustrate you not allowing the normal play.

At first some menu items may be missing - see the retail version "how-to" for details. There is a "cshell.dll" patched library - you should replace it to remove most of graphical glitches on GeForce boards.

One more thing which is broken is the HUD pop-ups in this game - in case they come up (e.g. when killing a monster) the game screen will flicker for three or four seconds while the game actually goes on so you will remain vulnerable for the enemies. This is a very distracting bug, but there is a dirty hack available (See the game's retail version "how-to" notes).

Additional Comments

GeForce owners (such as me) should consider reading the "how-to" in retail version. I am using GeForce 9400GT with proprietary 190.42 driver. The game installs fine and runs more or less normally, but the gameplay is way to buggy to be considered playable. Played for an hour, completed the first level. Additional help could be gathered in the retail version "how-to" and notes - most of the bugs occur in both versions.

HOWTO

Broken menu labels:

In order to fix disappearing items on GeForce boards, google for "cshell.dll" library replacement for the game.

It is a well-known GeForce patch released back in 2000. Here it is the download mirror. Unpack the archive and replace the "cshell.dll" file in the game installation directory.

HOWTO
Corrupted HUD:

The ingame pop-ups in Heads Up Display, showing the monsters' health. They make a big mess.
In order to solve this I've found a simple and dirty solution of replacing these useless buggers with
null-length files. This actually works but it involves playing tricks with the game resource files.

You can simply reproduce the patch yourself. To do this, go to the game installation folder and perform the following file operations one by one (Note that you may require root user access rights in order to perform some of these).

mkdir HUD
cd HUD
mkdir MONSTERHEALTH
cd MONSTERHEALTH
touch MONSTERHEALTH_BG.PCX
touch MONSTERHEALTH_BG_LEFT.PCX
touch MONSTERHEALTH_BG_TOP.PCX
touch MONSTERHEALTH_BG_BOTTOM.PCX
touch MONSTERHEALTH_BG_RIGHT.PCX

A folder named "HUD" should appear in the game directory. If it is, you may now play without corrupted HUD. You are done.
