Homeworld

Homeworld's epic tale begins in the far reaches of the universe. You were the benign lords of a peaceful society located in the center of a lush spiral galaxy. For as long as anyone could remember, no one challenged your peaceful existence. But then came the conquerors, invading with the sole purpose of overtaking your world. Billions died, and the survivors were relocated to a cold, lifeless planet on the edge of the galaxy. Hundreds of years later, all knowledge of your previous existence has been lost. Only vague myths remain, until the discovery of an ancient tablet buried within the ruins of a half-destroyed craft in the great-banded desert. This Guidestone reawakened the knowledge of your ancestry, and set your race on the path home - coordinates leading straight into the heart of the galaxy. Sixty years ago, construction began on the giant Mothership that will carry millions of your people into deep space. Construction is now complete. Your journey to the Homeworld begins here...

What works

Out of box:

install

the game in default settings (sw rendering 640x480, no sound)

With workarounds:

nearly everything, but just some times.

audio settings should be:

Use the ALSA Driver with:
DirectSound Hardware Acceleration: Emulation
Driver Emulation: Checked

should be run with:

cd dir/where/homeworld/is/instaled

padsp wine homeworld.exe /dsoundCoop /sw /safeGL

^ this means, that every time the game runs with default settings.

the resolution of screen should be set to 640x480 before starting (the easiest way is to run it two times (first time it crashes, bud leaves required resolution, second time it runs) or use xrandr

Some times the resolution can be changed, some times the engine can be switched to openGL. But not both and it's nearly impossible to play game with sound, openGL and resolution different from 640x480

Machine description:
cpu: core2duo 1.8G
mem: 1.5G
card: intel 945GM (intel driver, hw acceleration on)
xorg: 1.4
resolution: 1600x1200 (sometimes i run the game in this resolution:)

The behavior of start is very unpredictable. When I want to run it I nerly every time spend 10 minutes restarting it again and again until I got it working with sound in full resolution.

Then the game runs flawlessly. But just to restart and then another 10 minutes of playing.

No deterministic way (step-by-step) was discoveret.

It is interesting that graphic interfere with sound. Without sound any graphic mode runs ok. With sound it is roulete.

wine homeworld.exe /h
displays commandline options (take a look, some of them are really usefull)

What does not

Graphic settings. It looks like problems with mode switching (initializing).

When resolution is changed, there is pointer left for eternity (some times).

DirectX rendering.
