What works
Having been through the other case files, I found that with sound disabled in Wine, the game plays much better. (see: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=573&iTestingId=30136 ) I was able to select 32bit gfx and choose resolutions other that 640x480. Also the game starts up every time.
On my system (Intel E5200, nVidia 7100, 2gb RAM) performance was snappy, and the game looked great at 1024x768x32bit windowed.
What does not
Sound does not work (although there is a work around), also, keyboard support was iffy. The game would register the first couple of key presses and then the keyboard would stop responding. I tried changing my default keymap, but this had no effect. This could be my keyboard since I use an old Mac Pro keyboard, but no other application has this issue, and even with the keymap set to "generic 105 key" I had the same issue.
Workarounds
What was not tested
I did not test D3D GFX, network play, or the sound work around. Also, since I have a large widescreen monitor, I only used the windowed mode.

Additional Comments
In my case, I found that the installer would not run without sound enabled, so in order to play the game, first run the installer, then create an application specific config for homeworld.exe with sound disabled and virtual desktop set to 640x480. Launch the game, choose options, video and choose opengl as the renderer. set the resolution and color depth as you like, then choose accept. the screen will resize and you should still be able to choose ok. Quit the game, return to winecfg and using the per-application setting for homeworld.exe set the virtual desktop to whatever resolution you choose in game, and away you go! (Assuming your keyboard works better than mine ;) ) NOTE! Never set the systemwide defaults in wine to a 640x480 virtual desktop, as winecfg will not fit in a 640x480 screen (The ok and cancel buttons are cut off) and you'll have a heck of a time getting it out of that mode... In digging around, it's possible that my keyboard errors have to do with the combo of nVidia drivers, compiz and OpenGL... (See: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=347682 )
