What does not

Does not install when ~/.wine is an NFS mount. Trying to run:

wine /media/cdrom/AUTOPLAY.EXE

starts the installation dialogue but when the button to install is pressed the console issues the error:

err:exec:SHELL_ExecuteW cannot set directory L"Z:\\fm\\"

Trying to install by:

wine /media/cdrom/FM/Setup.exe

starts the installdialogue sequence. On a system with ~/.wine as an NFS mount, when it comes to do the disk space check, you get the message:

The available space on System disk drive (c:) is not enough for this installation.
This installation requires 45MBytes of free space on this drive.

On a system (same OS and Wine version) where ~/.wine is on a locally attached disc, installation proceeds more correctly.

Adobe Acrobat Installer will not install unless Internet Explorer 5.01 or later is installed :-(

Anyway, I tried running FrameMaker and it worked! It had huge problems with fonts but this may well be because I haven't installed any in Wine -- does Wine not use the Linux fonts? More investigation needed.
