What works
Essentially, the game is fully playable -- but see the extra remarks.
What does not
Resolution 1024x768 did not worked.
Workarounds
What was not tested
Multi-player was not tested. None of the editors were tested, as they
need the downloading of the .NET framework. For the INI or the XML
editor I presume sandard editors will work just fine.
I did not play the game until the end. At the time of writing, I had three cities controlled (Drassen, Chitzena, Cambria), three SAM sites. I also visited Estoni, San Mona (but have not dealt with Kingpin yet), etc. For those in the know, coolness progress was at 6 or 7 (can't quite remember).

Additional Comments
In Kubuntu 10.04 with the latest wine (1.2rc2), jagged alliance 2 (gold version) plus the v1.13 mod (latest - by early june 2010 - single-click installer) essentially works. 1. The installation of ja2 went OK. I have *not* tested the game. 2. I made no alterations to wine's default config options neither did I used winetricks. 3. The installation of v1.13 also went OK. Since wine's file dialog cannot "see" hidden directories, I had to extract the files to some temp dir and then copy everything to the ja2 folder (overwriting everything, etc.). 4. Starting ja2 from the icon did not work. I also got a runtime error of the form Function vfs::COpenReadFile::COpenReadFile could not open Ja2_Settings.INI The indicated file does not exist, so this may be a problem with the mod itself. 5. Starting ja2 from the command line did work. At first, the screen was all fuzzy and then the Sirtech logo appeared, but in a clunky way with frequent hiccups in the music. As soon as the main screen appears all is fine. 6. The line command cursor from the Konsole just froze over ja2. Solution: just drag the cursor to the bottom, before starting the game. 7. If I tampered with the INI settings and choose the 1024x768 resolution all I got was a black screen. Solution: don't, just stick to 800x600. 8. Starting the game, the image was uncentered. Solution: I had to hack directly with the monitor buttons to "recenter" the image. Somewhat misteriously, in subsequent plays this problem disappeared. After all this, you may well wonder why do I rate ja2 silver. Well, the game is *perfectly playable* with no significant problems, only the occasional crash (but very rare and not reproducible), the occasional UI glitch, etc. Most likely, this is due to the mod itself that is still being actively developed. Just save often and you will be OK.
