What works

What does not

Main screen mostly blacked out.  Only a badly-tracking mouse cursor is visible.  Top menu intermittently displays. Page faults if anything is clicked other than Quit.

It's known to require 640x480x16 but fglrx (and many other drivers) don't support 16-bit depths or less.  I tested it using both Xephyr and VNC following the 256 color workaround. The mouse cursor tracked better in Xephyr.  Neither of these support 3D acceleration so that may be the source of the problem.

Additional Comments

Tested with Radeon HD 7340 (fglrx 2:13.350.1-0ubuntu2). Game version 1.2 via update. The game will exit immediately unless started using winefile or the Start Menu *.lnk file. The game asset configuration file (inquis.zix) always maps the CDs to S: and T: drives. It's possible to map these drives to directories with winecfg but the paths still need to be fixed: 0 s:\ 'Zork Grand Inquisitor Disk 1 1 t:\ 'Zork Grand Inquisitor Disk 2 ---------------------------- After dumping the contents of the CDs to the S: and T: target directories, the installer can be started from S: using winefile.

HowTo / Notes

First, you need to apply patch from Bug 1347. Game won't redraw properly without this patch.
  1. Install the game into c:\games\zgi.
  2. Create folders c:\games\zgi\cd1, c:\games\zgi\cd2
  3. Copy the complete contents of each CD into its respective folder you've created in step 2.
  4. Modify file c:\games\zgi\inquis.zix to have following info at the head of file: inquis.zix
  5. Run winecfg and set the following values:
Applications / Windows version: Windows XP
    Graphics / Emulate a virtual desktop: 640x480
(required, in 0.9.24 game doesn't start)
(in 0.9.35 transition videos don't play without virtual desktop)
    Audio / OSS Driver
(Important! ALSA isn't functional in Wine 0.9.24 for this game)
(Edit: wine 0.9.35 ALSA works as usual)

  6. Switch X to 16bpp
  7. Run the game wine ./zgiwin.exe

Loading Save Game Crash
by Ben Leggett on Monday August 18th 2008, 22:04
I recently tried installing this game in Vista, and I see the exact same loading save game crash, as well as some occasional major redraw problems. Seems it's not just wine.

engine / redraw bugs
by Vit Hrachovy on Friday November 3rd 2006, 14:47
Zork: Nemesis and Zork: Grand Inquisitor share the same (or very similar) graphic engine, so fixing the direct draw bug (seem to be out of sync or badly double buffered) will fix both games.

I'll create BugZilla tickets (screen redrawing, ALSA support, full screen support) when I put both game demos somewhere for developers to be able to test the fixes.
