HowTo / Notes

Getting game to run
In order to launch the game you must set your wine version to Windows 98.
This game doesn't handle full-screen, force a window size like 800x600 in winecfg.
  • lower your monitor resolution since it will resize the window to 640x480 which is hard to see on a high resolution monitor.

Currently, as of wine 2.4, the game cannot run using Software mode or Direct3D. It will crash shortly after starting the game.

What does work is 3dfx mode. You will need to install a 3dfx/glide wrapper in your wine installation for this to work

  •  Download the file from this site:

http://www.zeus-software.com/d...

  • Install the wrapper using wine
  • When starting the game, now choose the 2nd option for rendering: Glide/3dFX
  • Launching and playing the game all the way through should work but there will be strange artifacts due to using 3dfx mode, primarily lines and semi-transparent doors.
Controls and Saves

Controls

This isn't a mouse game! It looks like there should be a moving cursor in this game, however there is not. So don't think wine's input isn't working.

Use aswd for movement and the number keys for inventory/weapons. The spacebar activates whatever you're currently holding and the tilda key puts away whatever you're holding. Sometimes enter is used to active items, other times spacebar.

Saves

If you move you game folder from one machine to the next, for whatever reason, moving the Saves folder isn't enough. You need to do a fresh install of the game, move the Saves folder into the new installation and then copy the file in /Bin/stgo.pgo from the old location into the new location. It contains references to the save files for some reason and the game won't recognize your old save games without this one file.
