What works

  • Ton & Sprache / sound, music & voice with ALSA
  • Intros & Animations
  • Auflösung / resolution 1024x768
  • Laden & Speichern / load & save
  • virtual desktop mode

What does not

  • Needs a native quartz.dll or crashes after the intro, unable to find some "pin".
  • Needs the MPEG-3 decoder l3codecx.ax or crashes (bug #18773) after
    err:ole:CoGetClassObject class {38be3000-dbf4-11d0-860e-00a024cfef6d} not registered

Extract l3codecx.ax (with cabextract) from the CD-ROM in \DirectX9\DirectX.cab to your \windows\system32\ directory. Then invoke
     wine regsvr32 l3codecx.ax
  • The mouse may exit the window before it reaches the border (bug #18774), preventing you from scrolling the view or clicking at objects.
You need to a) allow applications to grab the mouse via winecfg and b) set the registry key
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\DirectInput]

    "MouseWarpOverride"="force"

This will restrain mouse movement to the window, allowing it to reach any position.
Alas, this does not work in the load/save, settings and options screens. Navigate the former using the cursor keys.
Sadly, the options menu (with vsync and subtitle settings) is still unusable, due to erratic (or missing) mouse movement and lack of cursor control.
  • There's some buffer overflow causing Wine to crash in DSOUND_bufpos_to_mixpos(). It is avoided by using WINEDEBUG=warn+heap, as this puts some extra bytes around each allocation.

Workarounds

What was not tested

  • Full-screen mode with all those settings in place.
  • OSS
  • Playing to the end. Now that you know how, you play and report results.
  • Nur die ersten Szenen ausprobiert.

Additional Comments

Good mouse control is important for this application as it contains 3 (untested) action sections, one where timely pointing is critical to success. Nach dem Einstiegsvideo (Artischocke) eine Weile bei dunklem Bildschirm warten, dann steht Fenimore auf. Towards the end of the intro, wait a little on the dark screen for Fenimore to stand up. Zusammenfassung / All in all, the needed registry keys: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\X11 Driver] "DXGrab"="Y" [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\DirectInput] "MouseWarpOverride"="force" and the required command line to start it -- but don't forget running once: wine regsvr32 l3codecx.ax prior to this: WINEDEBUG=warn+heap WINEDLLOVERRIDES=quartz=n wine PICTuRE.exe Feel free to send Wine's error output to /dev/null as many errors from dsound scroll by.
