.kkrieger

This is a fairly complete and stable version of .kkrieger, although it doesn't contain a lot of features. It can be downloaded from .theprodukkt's site for free in about three seconds.

What works

The game requires no installation; it can simply be run in place. Therefore, installation works. The game launches, the loading bar appears, and then the main menu appears. Gameplay itself, including moving around with the mouse and keyboard, shooting, etc. appears to work well. Sound works.

What does not

Unfortunately the main menu text is replaced by blurry blocks and does not respond to mouse clicks, so some fumbling with the arrow keys and hitting Enter is required to actually start a new game. Fortunately, the game itself is so basic that this is easy to do (there is no process of creating a character, profile, signing into a server, nor having to adjust lots of game settings, etc.). Gameplay itself works almost perfectly, except that, like the main menu, the health and ammo meters do not show up. The game itself is also somewhat slow, but I suspect this is due to my low-end hardware.

Workarounds

What was not tested

I didn't go through the whole game because it was rather slow on my machine, so it's possible that there are gameplay glitches further along in the level.

Additional Comments

One really does need a fairly fast CPU and GPU to run this game properly. Unfortunately I only had a 600 MHz Pentium III (but with a GeForce FX 5200) with which to try .kkrieger. Other games, like Quake III, run flawlessly with only a 600 MHz CPU, but .kkrieger relies so much on procedural generation of game elements that for a quality experience it really does need a more powerful CPU (their site recommends a 1.5 GHz PIII).

Fail on loading
by P. Neidhardt on Tuesday November 5th 2013, 3:32
Starting from Wine 1.5.* until current version (1.7.5), I have been unable to load the game. It will crash at some random position, but will never complete.

Wine 1.2 was a platinum for me. Any clue on that?
