What works

Installation and game works well.

What does not

Initially I could not get this game to work without using the "Emulate a virtual desktop" option in winecfg. It turns out that the game requires a resolution of 800x600 for the main game menu screen. My X Server configuration was broken for that resolution and wine+randr was choosing a refresh rate not supported by my monitor. This isn't Wine's fault or the game's fault, necessarily, but users should note that 800x600 seems to be a hard coded requirement and your xconf may need to be tweaked to support it in some cases.

The actual game play, however, can run at the much higher resolutions you are probably used to with some tweaking (1920x1200 for me).

Workarounds

What was not tested

I haven't yet tested this game with input devices other than keyboard and mouse (ex. Joysticks and game pads). It would be interesting to see if force feedback works (Which seems to be the whole focus of the one and only patch from EA). Perhaps I'll dig one out someday and post back here.

Additional Comments

There is a configuration file named rendercaps.ini in your "My Documents/EA Games/Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2/" folder. If you change the LimitResolution=1 line to LimitResolution=0 then you can get more resolutions to choose from while running the game. I was able to race at 1920x1200. Enjoy.

HowTo / Notes

HOWTO

I copied whole CD to HD, edit /autorun/autorun.cfg and changed EReg=1 and IEVersion=4.0 to EReg=0 and IEVersion=  and then start setup.exe, with that installation goes smooth:).

Starting: CD must be in drive and then started his AutoRun.exe. (or you can use nocd patcher, but avoid running NfsHP2.exe directly !)
Game menu: Cars, menu tree in Hot Pursuit, Championship, etc. not shown:(
Playing: Very smooth, with some graphics problems (no tires), Special Efects and World Detail work with any settings, but Car Detail must be on low (with any other whole car not shown in the game)
Sound: Perfect with OSS or Alsa, but with emulation (if your card doesnt has hardware mixer, because alsa dmix really sucks)

Some messages from console, when in menu:
 fixme:d3d_texture:IWineD3DBaseTextureImpl_ApplyStateChanges >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_VALUE (0x501) from glTexParameteri GL_TEXTURE_MAX_ANISOTROPY_EXT ... @ basetexture.c / 463

and when actually start some race and play it, constantly give this:
fixme:d3d:get_src_and_opr Unhandled texture argWINED3DTA_SPECULAR
