Diamond Mind Baseball (DMB) version 9 is as of late 2006 the current edition of the statistics-based baseball simulation game. It was released in Fall of 2004. DMB 9 has a GUI and an image of a baseball field that games are played on, but is ultimately a text-based game focusing on batter-pitcher matchups and in-game strategic decisions.
DMB 9 contains many additional features, but has not significantly changed in look and feel and gameplay from v.8.
DMB 9 installs without complaint under Wine 0.9.18-0.9.24 (but see below for more). Under
0.9.18 it installs and runs and generally works. I can add DMB seasons
from both floppies and CDs, convert seasons from previous versions, create organizations, draft, play games,
import and create teams and players, autoplay seasons, run reports,
change computer manager settings, etc with little or no difference from
the Windows version. It has shown no tendency to crash under actual
What does not
Under versions of Wine 0.9.19-0.9.24 the game is not playable. It installs and runs but then complains about a report error and crashes when you attempt to do almost anything with it. I haven't found a workaround.
There are several minor problems with the game under Wine 0.9.18. The most significant is that it is impossible to generate a new league schedule using any method other than a preexisting template. Thus you can't have a league with an unusual (i.e., non-historical) number of divisions, games, or teams without getting a template from elsewhere. Also, when opening a draft the game tends to crash, though this is not entirely consistent. It will open a draft once, but then tends to crash if that draft is closed and it or another is opened. But sometimes it doesn't.
The other problems are more cosmetic. The program tends to hang occasionally for a couple of seconds, especially when starting a new game. The in-game commentary does not display. There is a delay when it would normally appear, then the result of the play is displayed. This does not affect playability but does detract from the flavor of the game.
Boxscores don't look very good and the numbers tend to run together with the included Wine fonts. I installed some TrueType fonts and this cleared it up.
What was not tested
I have not tried to make use of the Encyclopedia feature. I have not made use of all of the included reports, but I can't imagine some working and some not as they are mining the same set of data. I have not yeat tried to set up a playoff schedule. I have not tried DMB 9 on a version of Wine prior to 0.9.18.
Note as above that I tested the game with later Wine releases with poor results. My results were identical on Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper Drake).
