What works

- Installation

- Global Updates, Ingame Updates. Updates crash sometimes (as they do in native win32), but work either. Don't worry, just restart it.

- All aspects of the game

What does not

There is nothing that doesn't work! (at least I wasn't able to find something...) However, there are a few "sharp edges":

- DirectX Graphics looks ugly, but you don't want it, OpenGL ist perfectly well supported.

- Sometimes the sound can make troubles (as in win32). This is resolved in recent versions, however if it happens, switch to alsa with "wincfg" or disable the sound output in the configuration interface.

- In some cases setting color depth to 16, Effects to off and texture quality to low resolves rendering problems (as in win32)

- As in native win32, updates seem to fail from time to time (game crashes), but they don't. Just restart it.

Most of the problems seen in wine happend in native win32 (Windows XP SP2) as well, and seem resolved for now, therefor except of the DirectX-Topic there is now known problem!

Workarounds

What was not tested

I was only able to test it on Kubuntu Edgy, Wine 0.9.20+ from WineHQ-Repos on i386 with up-to-date proprietary ATI graphic card drivers (fglrx)... Other graphic cards (nvidia, ...) providing OpenGL/GLX are expected to work as well.

HowTo / Notes

HOWTO

Hinweis: Es ist ebenfalls eine deutschsprachige Anleitung verfügbar.

The Installation works perfectly with up-to-date wine version (0.9.10+) and accelerated GLX graphic drivers. However; in some cases, the start menu entries are not created, or running it by a script is wished.

Step by step installation guide:

  1. Download the game from here: Austrian Edition or here: Swiss Edition
  2. Run the installer. I recommend to install it to c:\orfski07. This howto expects that it is done this way.
  3. Create a script to run it (see below)
  4. Optional: Change the language in the script (highlighted part, discribed below as well).
  5. Run the game by executing "orfski07"
  6. Important: Make sure you select OpenGL and not DirectX as Renderer - otherwise the graphic will look very ugly!
  7. Crashes from time to time during update-processes are "normal" and happen in native win32 as well.
The Script:

Go to the game directory: $ cd $HOME/.wine/drive_c/orfski07

Put the following content in a newly created file named "orfski07":

#!/bin/bash
cd $HOME/.wine/drive_c/orfski07
exec wine Updater.exe -execute game.exe -edition 38 -language de -endowment high

You can change the highligted language code (here: de) - Just select one of: en (english), de (german), fr (french - sf version only) and it (italian - sf version only)

Make the script executeable: $ chmod 755 orfski07

Link the script to your $PATH (as root): # ln -s $HOME/.wine/drive_c/orfski07 /usr/local/bin/orfski07

HOWTO

Deutschsprachige Anleitung

#!/bin/bash
cd $HOME/.wine/drive_c/orfski07
exec wine Updater.exe -execute game.exe -edition 38 -language de -endowment high

Der hervorgehobene Sprach-Code (hier: de) kann geändert werden. Verfügbar sind unter anderem: en (Englisch), de (Deutsch), fr (Französisch) and it (Italienisch)

Mache das Script ausführbar: $ chmod 755 orfski07

Linke das Script in deinen $PATH Bereich (als root): # ln -s $HOME/.wine/drive_c/orfski07 /usr/local/bin/orfski07

NOTE

The following problems are resolved with 0.9.29:

Currently there are some unresolved issues about wine 0.9.28 and the Textures. If you recognize problems with the textures, downgrade to wine 0.9.27 and report it. (Last seen on 1.9 / Bormio)

Sometimes in Ubuntu with WineHQ wine, the game was "bucking". This can be resolved by using an CPU-optimized build of wine. (Last seen on 2.0 / Wengen)

WARNING

When using current Ubuntu (Edgy Eft), ATI Graphic Drivers (fglrx) from ATI itself as well as current wine from WineHQ, some Rendering-Problems may occur (bucking, game is freezing every 4 or 5 seconds)... If this happens, it is recommended to recompile wine:

Make sure you have the fglrx developement headers (xorg-driver-fglrx-dev) installed.

As root, or as normal user (using "fakeroot" for debian/rules binary) do:

# apt-get build-dep wine

# apt-get source wine

# cd wine-0.9.??~winehq?~ubuntu~?.??

(e.g. go to the newly created directory)

# debian/rules binary

Afterwards, install the newly created packages. Wine is then compiled using the new fglrx-opengl-header and archive files, and the issue should be resolved.
