Additional Comments

Since the game is 20 years old, it technically works (or rather, doesn't work) as well as it does on Windows. However, I was able to run all the Windows patches listed for the game's many understandable issues running in 2019, and once used, the game appears to work well. Details below.

I was unable to get anything to work with any incarnation of the installation instructions provided. I'm somewhat new to the wine community, so I'm not sure what all matters or not. But due to the level of desperation I faced, I'd be remiss to not include everything.

Installation

  1. Setup a clean 32-bit WINEPREFIX:

    WINEPREFIX=<path>
    WINEARCH=win32 wineboot -u

  2. Install version 1.0 (from mounted iso - Autorun.exe)
  3. Install version 2.0 patch

  4. Download user-made Windows 7 patch to address known windows issues with the game, and install using the README. For my patch, the steps included:

    • Replacing files in the installation directory
    • Importing a .reg file into regedit (I used winetricks)

  • Halloween ride Tentacle Terror now breaks down correctly.
  • Improved 1st person cross-hair.
  • Fixed the "All Visitors List" problem.
  • Corrected the display of 'selected Address' in the "E-mail address" window.
  • CTRL + left-click mouse to copy an item correctly.
  • Tuned 1st person camcorder mode to stop players getting stuck near fences.
  • Fixed bug when undoing already placed queue blocks.
  • Updated error message reporting in online lobby.
  • Wheels on the coasters now go round!
  • Coaster sounds should all stop/start correctly now.

Online

  • Players can no longer vote for their own park.
  • Only one vote per day allowed.
  • Downloads can now be aborted by pressing escape.
  • Players can't now blackmark or 'Goto' themselves.
  • First-person online now moves your avatar around correctly.
  • Error message if you reply while visiting a park without having been asked anything yet.
  • Avatars are now more distinguishable in chat (twice as big).
  • When using the 'Goto' function there is now an added confirmation. 'Goto' will now take you to another player's position if in the same park.

Miscellaneous

  • Save/Load bug fixed.
  • Exits from rides can be placed 'under' track rides and the bridges are built correctly.
  • Dual Voodoo3 cards now supported.
  • Faster 1st person mode.
  • There is a resolution.sam file that enables higher resolutions to be utilised.
  • The camera zoom can be unlocked with CTRL-SHIFT-ALT Space.
  • Bug in Challenges has been fixed.
Installation procedure.

You have to follow this procedure to correctly install Theme Park World:

  • Insert and mount the disc.
  • Launch winecfg.
  • Make sure you are in Windows 2000 mode.
  • Make sure the D: drive points to the folder where the Theme Park World CD is mounted.
  • Install the game. DO NOT LAUNCH IT WHEN INSTALL IS FINISHED.
  • Patch the game to version 2.0 (only if wanted).
  • Make sure the following file does exist:
    ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/drivers/secdrv.sys
    If not, copy the secdrv.sys file from your Theme Park World installation folder to
    ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/drivers/
  • You can now launch the game.
