The There client will work 'out of the box', but very broken.
To get it working almost flawlessly, follow these directions.

These commands will fix most issues, they can be done before or after installing There:
  • export WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-there
  • export WINEARCH=win32
  • winetricks ie7 (Note: ie6 and ie8 will work, but the map doesn't work in ie6 and ie8 is much slower)
  • winetricks msxml3 (required for most there.com pages to work in IE)
  • winetricks flash (required for much of the UI)
  • winetricks d3dx9_36 (required to use DX9 renderer)

To get sound systems working:
  1. Get l3codeca.acm (installing Windows Media Player will put it in system32)
  2. In C:\windows\system32, rename l3codeca.acm to winemp3.acm, replacing the original (you may want to back it up)
  3. In winecfg > Libraries, override winemp3.acm

In the command for the created desktop launcher, remove the backslashes from -U and -l.

Change the renderer to OGL for best performance and compatibility. This can be done with the in-game settings (There > Settings > Audio/Video > Renderer > OpenGL) or the ThereTweaker (default: C:\Makena\There\ThereClient\Resources\dlls\theretweaker.exe).
