What works

Installing as 'Compact' seems to install correctly.

What does not

Installation:
Does not let you install Music/Movies from disc. Gives error. ( Install -> Costom ). Causing crash in installer.

Typical also does not install Movies from disc ( Music works fine). Gives error. ( Install -> Typical ). Causing crash in installer.

Requires crack as it cannot read from the disc to start it.

To copy Music from your CD to your installation check the Extra Comments box.

IF you are not getting the Music/Movies problem it is PROBABLY my CD, it may be scratched.

For me the game will not start, it gives alot of errors ( Some with some humour from the developers :) ) and then exits. If anybody knows a way to fix any of this please post and retest.

Additional Comments

When you run Autorun.exe the installation menu is strange: Untranslated Install option Untranslated Install DX Option Untranslated Gamespy option Untranslated Readme option Untranslated Exit option Easy enough to understand: Install Staropia Install Direct X 9.0 Install Gamespy Read Readme Exit. To install movies and music: Open /home/username/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Eidos Interactive/Mucky Foot/StarTopia/data/sfx (Default) OR go to Applications -> Wine -> browse C:/ Drive -> Program Files/Eidos Interactive/Mucky Foot/StarTopia/data/sfx/music Also open your Startopia CD to: CDRomdrive/data/sfx/music and copy EVERYTHING in that folder to your SFX folder on your harddrive. You now have the Music. Or I don't because my CD will not allow me to copy it. It may be scratched or protected, could anybody test and comment which? I am not sure how to do the movies. I will look into it.

HowTo / Notes

Notes for startopia

At the moment of this writing the wine version is 1.5.11

I have played startopia for an hour or so, and everything works fine.

Installation manual:

google for the following two updates on the web and download them.

startopia_patch_1_01.exe

startopia_patch_1_02.zip

mount the startopia cd

Configure your wineprefix to use win32 winecfg

WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=/prefix/dir/ winecfg

Verify that wine is set to windowsXP with winecfg and close it.

run the AutoRun.exe found on the cd with wine

WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=/prefix/dir/ wine /path/to/AutoRun.exe

follow the usual installation steps. Do not install gamespy.

cd to your startopia dir

cd '/prefix/dir/drive_c/Program Files/Eidos Interactive/Mucky Foot/StarTopia/'

Run the 1.01 patch

wineWINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=/prefix/dir/ wine /path/to/ startopia_patch_1_01.exe

unzip the 1_02 update in the startopia dir overwriting all files as needed

cd '/prefix/dir/drive_c/Program Files/Eidos Interactive/Mucky Foot/StarTopia/'

gunzip /path/to/startopia_patch_1_02.zip

Now start startopia

Take some time to adjust the video settings, you should be able to play it in very high resolutions, also due to the 1.02 patch you can enable all kinds of opengl goodies that you were never able to use on when you first bought startopia.

Cheers

Rob

Performance

When you have performance issues.

Set your audio to lower quality en less sound events.

It seems that wine is not very good with dealing with a lot of sound events and pulse.

 Cheers

Rob
