What works

I have tested the following, all works:

  • Installed using Wine from mounted DVD
  • Run using "winefile"
  • Load AI 8 file
  • Save AI 9 file
  • Modify 0.5MB (A3) 4-color document using text tool, resize tool

What does not

The following two points have arisen so far:

  • Tooltips do not contain text, excepting the first letter. So, they are unusable. This is a pretty trivial point.
  • Floating windows from Illustrator stay on-screen when switching to another app (not running under Wine, e.g. Firefox). This is perhaps annoying, although the Wine "context" seems to stay, meaning that you can move the windows around even when the main Illustrator app menu is no longer there. I suspect that this is a Wine mis-config on my part, so I doubt it has much to do with Illustrator. As said, it is a minor niggle.

What was not tested

I have not tested more than given above. In particular, I am NOT an Illustrator \'power user\', so this should not be taken as confirmation that Illustrator does everything under Wine that it can do under Windows: it is a very complex app. Nonetheless, it does seem to be working very well so far. I will try and update this report if I find out more examples of what does and what does not work under Wine.

To that I should also add, that I am by no means a Wine power user, either. I just installed Wine half an hour ago and Illustrator twenty minutes ago. So, take it from me, Wine is one damn fine piece of software if it is that easy to use!

Additional Comments

I\'ll upgrade this once I can confirm that none of the errors I mention get in the way of using the program. Note that I have not yet re-configured ANYTHING to get this to work. It is a pure out-of-the-box install.
