What works

Installer The game You need a no-dvd patch. which fortunably is available at gamecopyworld.com. There are different versions, I used the one sized 11,8 mb when extracted. In my case the installer failed to create the shortcuts, but you can manually start the (patched version of) the .exe from the directory it was installed in. Oh, and as other users mentioned, you have to rename the "movies" directory to something else like for instance "movies.orig" .

What does not

Oddly enough, sometimes the game fails to load. Kill process under system monitor, then rinse and repeat. I can not explain this bug, One would assume a game works or not, not works like a charm sometimes, then next time you start it it crashes at startup, then next time booting it works great again, but it does seem to be the case. Oh well...that get' s the job done.

Additional Comments

Problem: The Godfather The Game won't install..Getting message on DirectX, it tries to install directx9 then doesn't follow up with installing the game afterwards. Fortunately, on the EA-boards, a user named Dr. Nick posted a proper solution: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=76586 " Re: EA's The Godfather The Game won't install..Getting message on DirectX? I have seen this error with many EA games and the only way around it was to copy the first (installation) cd to my HD and changing the DX version in the Autorun.cfg to 0. You can then start the install off the cd on your HD and insert the rest of the cds as usual when asked." That worked bypassing the initial installing problem.

How to Install The Godfather (wine 1.1.19)

The instructions below describe how to install The Godfather using Wine. They have been tested with Wine version 1.1.19. Installation of this game under Wine has improved since wine version 0.9.41, which was the previous version I had tested with. Basically, the installation works perfectly.

  1. Insert the game DVD into your DVD-ROM drive.
  2. Open a terminal window and change the current working directory to that of the DVD (for example, /media/cdrom0):
    • $ cd /media/cdrom0
  3. Run the installer:
    • $ wine AutoRun.exe
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the game.
  5. In the installation directory of the game, rename the "movies" directory to "movies.orig". (The default installation directory is "~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Electronic Arts/The Godfather The Game".)
