What works
Everything.
Initially I used an older full installer (LcInstallUSA_090313.exe from fileplanet). This installed fine, but under wine 1.3.36 the launcher crashed on start, under 1.4-rc1 it started, and about 2/3 of the way through the update, it said "Patch File is crashed. Must run program again".
I started over with a more recent installer (lastchaos_us_installer_20110803.exe from Atmoic Gamer). It installed fine, started the launcher, it updated, and upon clicking start, it gave the error "This file can not be run by itself".
I had to set the windows version to Windows 98. This allowed the patcher to truly finish (got a pop-up saying "Update is completed"), after which I was able to start/play the game.
