Upgrading Wine deletes necessary registry entries. This can be avoided by running wineboot after the upgrade, and before running SlingPlayer.
You can also disable this by running
echo disabled > ~/.wine/.update-timestamp
Tested in Ubuntu 16.04 under Wine 3.0-rc3:
You should now have a working SlingPlayer!
If you experience an assertion failure while the SlingPlayer is loading, issue the following command and try again:
winetricks orm=backbuffer
