I believe I may have resolved this. The problem is that you don't have the right codecs installed. I tried to get this working in Wine and I recieved the same error "unsupported format" when trying to convert a XVid avi file to TMV for my ft602.
Well, I switched to Vista, and got the same error. I hunted a bit more, and found that I have to have a specific codec. So I installed the "K-Lite codec pack". I installed that on Vista, and sure enough the video was recognized and was able to transcode the entire movie.
I switched back to Ubuntu 8.10, installed the K-Lite Codec pack and the program no longer errored out with the "unsupported format" message.
That said it does seem to lock up into about 3 minutes of transcoding.
What does not
Not installing the K-Lite codec. More than 3 minutes into the movie.
What was not tested
Smaller videos than three minutes.
