What works
If you succeed in installing Adobe Acrobat 6.0 (a big if), you'll be very impressed by the functionality it provides. So far almost everything that I have tested works (exceptions below). I can edit text, navigate pages, add and remove pages, insert headers and footers, rotate pages, add comments, encrypt and decrypt a document, zoom in and out, draw shapes ... In short, I have all of the functionality that I need.
What does not
Installation is VERY difficult. Before you begin, make backups of your "registry files" (i.e. ~/.wine/system.reg and ~/.wine/user.reg). Installation will fail repeatedly and the installer will not let you install over the failed installation until after you have replaced the "registry files" with your backups. (In my case, I didn't make backups, so I had to spend an hour manually purging all references to Adobe and Acrobat from the "registry files"). ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- The installation never completed successfully for me. After some time, persistence and plain dumb luck, I eventually got deep enough into the installation that the installer had made all the necessary entries to the registry files. At that point, I was still unable to start Adobe Acrobat. ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- I finally succeeded by: 1.) copying the C:\Program Files\Adobe directory from an MS Windows installation into a ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Adobe directory and 2.) replacing Wine's ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/riched20.dll with an the riched20.dll from IEs4Linux and 3.) adding a ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/msvcp60.dll from an MS Windows installation (I didn't try the msvcp60.dll from IEs4Linux, but it might work). ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- As I mentioned above, it works fairly well once it's up and running. I did notice two problems however: 1.) "Save As..." causes the application to crash. and 2.) When I send a page to my printer, it prints the PDF code, not the page. ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- There are two simple workarounds for these problems. To get around the "Save As..." bug, you can simply copy the PDF you want to work with to another file and then edit the new file. To get around the printing bug, you can simply print from a Linux PDF reader (KPDF, Evince, etc.).
