I have done this with Wine versions 1.0 to 1.1.6 and the last one I tested was the hacked 1.1.6 version from the comments. I got the same results with each one even after installing the patches. The maps kept showing up in a monochrome gray. How ever I found out that because I installed wine-doors, it was installing wine 1.0 over any version of wine I previously installed so the patches were braking. I fixed this by removing all versions of wine and downling the source for wine 1.0.1. Then I patched it using the curser and cnc2net patches. Then installed it from that source and used the d3dx9_29.dll file for the comments and now CNC3:Tiberium Wars and the expansion Kane's Wrath work flawless with all the graphics setting set to low. Do not install wine-doors if you want CNC3 to work properly.

Animated cursors is in wine 1.2.2/1.3.5+. the special broadcast networking support is wine 1.5.15+.
You need to have Mac OS X 10.6+, Solaris or linux kernel 3.4rc4 or higher.
And you should be fine. No need to use special version of wine anymore.
Cursor and Multiplayer Support
You need to use a special version of wine to get proper in-game cursors and network support.
You can acquire this by either patching and compiling wine yourself, or using a provided package.
Goto http://www.compholio.com/wine-kane/ to obtain these (DEBS and RPMS).
Internet play
You have to make sure that your "$HOME/.wine/drive_c/users/profiles/yourhomefolder/Application Data/C&C 3/Profiles/your_gameaccount/Options.ini" 'GameSpyIPAddress' fieldagrees with your online ip (for example GameSpyIPAddress = 84.171.46.121) and make sure that file is read-only.
Admin notes: Do NOT submit test results for patched versions of Wine. This is not a true representation of what Wine can achieve.
Do NOT submit test results for PlayOnLinux or anything else that is not Wine.
Do NOT submit test results where Multiplayer has not been tested. Full tests are need to correctly rate an application.
Tests that do not comply will be deleted without warning.
Installation
The installer says installation was aborted, even before starting to install files
If you are installing from a CD/DVD, try copying the game disc to your home directory and run it from there.

Starting the game
It hangs at the splash screen
Try running winecfg and disable all audio drivers. Of course that is not an acceptable solution, but it will help us to determine where the problem lies.
In-game issues
Some effect settings result in corruption or improperly displayed rendering
Try setting the VFX or Shader quality to a lower setting. Your graphics driver and/or wine may have bugs which result in visual defects at present.
The cursor animation does not play
Apply the relevant patches to wine or use a version with the functionality as described in the howto.

using wine version 1.7.44.
I did install tiberium wars and patched it to version 1.09, no problem at all.
patching kanes returns:
Patch not available
(german: "Patch nicht verfügbar")
starting kane works just fine though.
From kanes menu i choose online play -> kane normally downloads the patch itself and installs it.
This does not happen, it simply freezes :(
Anyone with an idea on how to handle this?

As i dont have time to retry this atm. this is what i did:
As i said, the downloaded patch did not work, nor did auto download via tiberium wars kane mainmenu.
Solution (for me) was to emulate a virtual window (using wine configuration tool), start Kane, click on multiplayer -> internet play.
It says there is an update to download, ends Kane, downloads the patch, patches the game and is done.
After that, you are free to deactivate the virtual desktop.
This helped me, perhaps it helps some out there too :P

BTW: To be clear, I'm not asking for support with playonlinux here, I'm just asking if someone get it working and how and I'll then try to repeat those steps with my setup.
