Wizardry 8

RPG with a 1st person view which can either use OpenGL and DirectX. It does work in OpenGL, however, there is a check for a debugger which gets triggered by Wine. With a crack patch and a small patch on the wine sources I was able to play the game flawlessly.

mouse problems in freesbd
by zsolty_szasz on Monday December 17th 2007, 10:40
Hello,
I am using wine-0.9.48. I have a problem with the wizardry_8_demo. I have mouse problems in the game, the mouse is friezed after a while, and I get back the control over it only if I press the numlock key on my keyboard or when I press the mouse scroll button. I wander how can this be fixed.
loading saved game bug workaround
by Ilya Platonov on Thursday December 15th 2005, 3:17
As the game loading in game is broken in current in current wine version (0.9.3) you can fix it by using native msvcrt.dll. You need to put native dll into wine system directory(~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/) and then run game with "WINEDLLOVERRIDES="msvcrt=n" wine
wiz8.exe".
Load Problem
by Ilya Platonov on Tuesday December 6th 2005, 6:05
I was able to run this game with 0.9.2 version in OpenGL mode. Still I have very strange problem with it. When I save game its going well, so I can see my .sav file in save directory, but when I choose Load game in menu I get strange "load game names" in list on the screen. For example if game was named "1" I get "1AV" and, if I am using "1AV" I get "AAvA". When I am trying to delete this game I get that I cannot do it, when I am trying to load it game is falling.

For me looks like bug in filesystem handling or may be in memory operations.

Still can play this game using my vmware in Software mode, but it is too slow.
[HOWTO] get Wizardry 8 running under wine
by Myckel Habets on Wednesday March 2nd 2005, 14:09
Tested under wine-20050111.

1) Mount the first cd and execute the setup program.
2) If the installation is around 50% the setup program asks for the 2nd disk.
2a) open a new console. unmount the cdrom and eject it.
2b) insert disc 2 and mount it.
2c) click in the setup program to continue installing.
3) After installation get the MFC42.DLL from
www.fortunecity.com/skyscraper/fortune/570/mfc42.html
4) Unpack the DLL and place it in your fake_windows system directory.
5) insert and mount the 3rd cdrom. Launch the game from the programs
directory in your fake_windows.
6) First you get a configure screen. Set rendering to OpenGL. And adjust
the other settings to your wishes (sound: use DirectX software emulation).
7) The configure program crashed here, so I had to restart the game, just
like I did before. Now you can play the game. Have fun.

I played the game for some hours. I didn't encounter any problems under wine and it ran smoothly.

I just tried it, but when I run Wiz8.EXE, I get a message about needing to unload a debugger. The best I can figure out is that the copy protection being used is preventing it from running. How did you get it running?

Using a fixed-exe/No-CD crack seems to let me play without a problem. It is unfortunate that a crack is needed to play a game legitimately.
