Native alternatives for non-windows platforms
There are some good alternatives to this application that might exist for your platform. You'll find a list on the main page of this application.
Getting Excel To Start For The First Time

Ok, go to any terminal of your choice, make sure you are logged in as you, and that wine is in your path. On Ubuntu all this is done for you.

You may need to replace some of the path names with the ones you entered during Excel/Office 97 installation. If you didn't change them, you can safely type all these commands word-for-word.

Type The Fallowing Commands:

  1. wine cmd
  2. C:
  3. cd "Program Files (x86)"
  4. cd "Microsoft Office"
  5. cd Office
  6. excel.exe /e

And then put in your name and initials, press OK, and your done! You don't need to do this again every time you open Excel, only the first to enter your name and initials.

Installing Service Release 1 For Office 97

Installing a service release for older versions of Office (Pre-2003) are not essential but are there if you need them.

Official details on Service Release 1 can be found Here

  1. Get Service Release 1 (Download Here, MS has stopped hosting it)
  2. Run the file, make sure all MS Office programs are closed.
  3. Read (or not) and agree to the license agreement.
  4. It will then give you a summary of what it can update or not.
  5. Press continue, the window will go white for a few seconds, don't panic.
  6. It will start copying files, wait patiently.
  7. It will ask you if you want to shutdown now, press yes (your computer will not restart, only Wine will fake a few things)
  8. Your done.

You need to install this before Service Release 2(b) if you are going to do so.

Unable To Install Service Release 2b

This service release adds full Y2K conformity to Office 97.

Official details Here. Official download Here, mirror Here.

Office 97 Service Release 2b can not be installed as it can't find the Office 97 installation. I blame the Office 97 installer, it can't finish registering itself in the system.
