What works
My first run of Webupdater for many months here but the downloaded update crashed giving "file not found" error. A previously downloaded copy of WebUpdater v2.5.6 was run successfully with Wine Program Loader. The program then reported that there were no updates.
Considering the main issue for most is getting a connected Garmin to be recognised, here again is how I got my Garmin Edge 705 recognised.
I connected my Garmin 705 with USB lead and checked that it was showing up on my desktop. In my case as two files Garmin and New Volume, the latter is the memory card. (Ubuntu 12.04 with gnome-session-fallback)
Open Wine config and leave it open. Under the
Drives tab hopefully there will be showing /media/Garmin, highlight
this and select Show Advanced. Change Type from Autodetect... to
Floppy Drive and then Apply. Do not close Wine config, if you do it will probably revert to Autodetect and your USB connected Garmin 705 will not be recognised
Run WebUpdater under Wine and you
should now be able to check for firmware updates for an Edge 705. In my case it reported there there no updates. It did download a language update many months ago.
What does not
Nothing I found in my case because I was using it to check if my firmware was up to date. I am not sure if others might hope to use this program to update their Garmin map.
Workarounds
What was not tested
As my Garmin 705 is by now an older satnav there are unlikely to firmware updates to download. View of the Garmin website confirms I already have the latest firmware.

Additional Comments
A higher rating would be earned if others report success updating a more modern Garmin than my Edge 705.
