What works
Everything. Installation and playing work perfectly after adding the below mentioned settings. The game works out of the box except the input, so you have to set the game mode to Windows 98 and dinput.dll to native. You can get the native version of dinput from the DirectX 9 installation or from the cd itself. Once you have the native dll just copy it in the C:/Windows/System32 folder and change the setting to native in winecfg. Now the game works fine.
