What works

Almost everything.

What does not

  • Hi-def PNG cursors are not displayed so wine uses default X cursors instead. I have tried to replace the game's cursors with lower quality versions I made but those didn't work either.
  • Windowed mode doesn't work with nvidia cards without driver installed unless wine is configured to emulate a desktop. To do this run 'winecfg' and on 'Graphics' tab check 'Emulate a virtual desktop' option. In the boxes below enter the dimensions of virtual desktop (e.g. 800x600, 1024x768, etc). Better choice for this and other games is to install official nvidia driver.

Additional Comments

The game works much better than in windows except for a few problems noted under 'What doesn't work'. I experienced no crashes while playing FM2007 in wine. 2D matches are much faster than in Windows, maybe a bit too fast. There are no random slowdowns of the game that are frequent in Windows. You can leave the game idle for hours and return later to find it as fast and as stable as when you left in (impossible in Windows), If you have wine bundled with SUSE distro you will have to remove this version in YaST and download and install the latest SUSE RPM (or compile the source yourself). Bundled version fails to install JRE. Sound works only with ALSA. Make sure you run 'winecfg' and select ALSA as audio driver. If you have the version from SUSE CD or DVD installed you will have to update it either with Online Update in YaST or with latest version from ALSA website. Online Update is easier but latest version might give better performance. If you want to use another sound-producing application, for example to listen to music, while playing FM2007 in wine, and your sound card doesn't do hardware mixing, you have to install dmix plugin and configure ALSA to use it by default as you can't specify a sound device in winecfg. I couldn't find a way to do this in SUSE's modified version of ALSA. If you have a problem like this or don't want to use dmix with your default sound device, you can change wine's registry entries to make it use the device you wish. To do this, run 'wine regedit' to start regedit application like the one available in Windows. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER->Software->Wine. Find a key called Alsa Driver or create it if it doesn't exist. Add the following values to this key or change them if they already exist: AutoScanCards = N DeviceCount = 1 DeviceCTL1 = your ALSA mixer defined in asound.conf or .asoundrc DevicePCM1 = your ALSA device defined in asound.conf or .asoundrc
