The widescreen patch using dinput8.dll does not work out-of-the-box.
Running the game without a NoCD patch.
Workarounds
For the widescreen patch using dinput8.dll, you need to make an entry in winecfg to use dinput8.dll natively. Installing dinput8 and d3dx9 through winetricks can make it work if the winecfg dll override alone did not help.
It may happen that you experience a blackscreen after the Konami logo, when you start the game with the widescreen patch. Just wait a few seconds and press Escape or Space and it will continue to the menu. The game has not crashed.
As I don't have a DVD drive in my laptop anymore, I had to resort to a NoCD patch. Mounting the iso is not enough for the game.
