What works

Installer & Configuration window at start.

The game failed to start after this point.  I had to install a few windows dlls to get the game to finally load and launch single player and multiplayer.  After installing the windows dllst the game played flawlessly, including multiplayer.

What does not

As noted above, after launch the game the configuration window worked fine but the main game failed to load.  I've noted what I had to do to get the game to work on my system in the workaround section.

Workarounds

I used winetricks to install dsound, dmsynth, directmusic, and devenum.  All the associated libraries were set to native.

Afterwards the game would launch, but sound was choppy and repeated.  I could get to the main menu, select species and click to start the game.  Then the screen would go blank and failed to load.

I had to switch dsound to the builtin wine libraries to fix the sound issue, which also fixed the problem with loading the campaign and multiplayer.  I worked through switching dlls between native and builtin.  The following is the list of native dlls I had to have enabled to play the game without
errors in the debug.

*devenum
*dmband
*dmcompos
*dmime
*dmloader
*dmscript
*dmstyle
*dmsynth
*dmusic

Remember to switch dsound to builtin if you have issues with sound and singleplayer/multiplayer not loading.

What was not tested

Did not play through the whole game.

HowTo / Notes

Making mouse work better
Original Idea by Pac Shady, tested on 1.1.7
    • Set the mouse smoothness to maximum
    • Turn on virtual desktop
    • Run wine with WINEDEBUG=-all

    Additionally you can try:

    • Install dx9 (not necessary at the moment, but still you can try)
    • Set maximum possible for you screen resolution or set 640x480. Depends on perfomance.
That makes the mouse movement work in all directions quite good, but mouselook speed on X axis is different from Y axis. On wide and opened areas which really consume performance, this bug gives the biggest effect.
    Internet Multiplayer
Since Sierra shut down master-servers, you will be unable to get internet multiplayer working (connect to any internet server) without applying a community .rez-file patch. Patch is still in heavy development (available on LithFAQ), so you should not reply about failures with online gameplay.
