In order to have sound working properly, you need to have timidity++ installed (aptitude install timidity must be enough) and running as server.
Various methods exists. I've used the "inittab" one. Here is my inittab line:
TI:23:respawn:su - bernard -c '~/bin/timidity.sh'
and the content of my timidity.sh script:
# Lanceur du serveur timidity++
/usr/bin/timidity --realtime-priority=100 -iA -B2,8 -Os1l -s 44100 -f -EFns=0 -EFresamp=1 -EFreverb=0 -EFchorus=0
These approach has various advantages:
- it runs timidity permanently and without having to launch it manually
- it doesn't run timidity as root (security holes always possible)
- it allows a single user (me :-)) to change various parameters of the server without having to become root for anything, even for killing the timidity process (which is owned by me).
