HowTo / Notes

HOWTO: Update Ocean software

When Ocean attempts to update itself, it attempts to access a network protocol (pings) that is restricted only to superuser access. If you run Ocean from the console, and try to update, you will get the following message:

WARNING: Trying to use ICMP (network ping) will fail unless running as root.

  • Using a console, change to the Ocean directory and type "su wine ocean.exe". Update your program, quit, and run it for normal use without superuser priveleges.
  • You may also press ALT-F2 to activate, in most window managers, the "Run Application" menu. If you have created a shortcut to Ocean in your Applications menu, simply type "Ocean" in the prompt, click "Show list of Known Applications" and click once "Ocean Research Library". Add "gksu" in front of the command that appears, and press Run. You will be prompted to enter a password.

NOTE: Quit Ocean after you have updated, and restart the program normally.
