What works

Most videos will play, but there can be a drop in framerate on higher-bitrate videos.

It's not very stable. The player will lock up frequently. Also, there can be visual glitches.

You need native quartz.dll and devenum.dll

1. You need the files "quartz.dll" and "devenum.dll" from an original Windows installation. You can also obtain these 'native' dlls by using Google.
2. Register the dlls by moving them to "~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32" and executing the following commands:

   regsvr32 "C:\windows\system32\quartz.dll"
regsvr32 "C:\windows\system32\devenum.dll"

3. Install a codec package, like K-Lite Codec Pack. This package also provides Media Player Classic.
4. You might need to do some additional configuration of the codecs to create a more stable viewing experience. K-Lite Codec Pack installs a few configuration tools in your Wine menu.
