WineHQ

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars

The public beta opened to FilePlanet paid subscribers on June 20, 2007 and to nonpaying members on June 23, 2007.

The initial beta release contains one map entitled "Sewer". This pits the two teams against one other in a fight to remove the Strogg from their sewer lair. The map consists of three main objectives for the GDF; constructing an EMP generator, planting explosives to gain access to the sewers, and finally hacking the computers to flood the Strogg out. The Strogg have to prevent the GDF from completing these objectives.

A patch has subsequently been released to add bots to the game, allowing server administrators to use this new functionality to fill up servers if they so desire.

A second build of the beta was released on August 3, 2007. It features a new map entitled "Valley" to replace "Sewer" and several changes to the game code to improve performance and implement new features. This map was featured in the tutorial videos released prior to the beta.

What works

Pretty much everything. Performance is excellent, graphics look excellent, all settings work. The mouse is a bit strange in the initial menus, but after entering a game, and going back in to the menus, you find that the mouse jerkiness is resolved.

What does not

Punkbuster!

Sometimes a map will not load, and is perpetually stuck after spawning 100% of the entities

holding on to caps lock does not allow free aiming in the fliers as it does in the windows version. also mouse wheel does not select the different weapons in the fliers like it should, but you can just use 1,2,3 keys.

HowTo / Notes

HOWTO

Attention Nvidia-users: 10xx driver series may not work. Use a 9xxx series driver if it fails

  • Compile Wine with this patch.
  • Create the string HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/X11 Driver/ScreenDepth with the value 32

This plus the first patch prevents ETQW from complaining about not being in 32bpp mode

  • Download this archive and extract it into windows/system32/
  • Open winecfg and set wtsapi32 to native. Also set Windows version to XP
  • Install ET:QW. The installer may crash when trying to change the Target directory
  • Now download this and execute it AFTER you set winver to XP
Check that msvcr80.dll, Microsoft.VC80.CRT.manifest and Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls.manifest are neither in the system32, nor in the game directory. If they are, delete them
  • Start the game with nice -n19 wineserver && wine etqw.exe. This way, wineserver won't use too much CPU time
